- Writing Prompts for English (pdf document). The Maryland Statewide Standards for College English Committee has asked that writing samples become an integral part of the placement process and has developed prompts for evaluating students' writing skills. During the first class session, ask students to write an essay on one of the topics included on the link. The instructor will review the essays and and contact the department chair if the instructor thinks a student should be placed into ENG-1010. To avoid putting students at risk, they should be moved into ENG 1010 prior to the second class session. To access the prompts, click on the link above for a .pdf document.
