Available Resources:
The Southern Maryland Studies Center is comprised of two
main areas, the Reading Room and the Archive.
The Reading Room:
The Reading Room consists of books and periodicals focusing
on the social, political and economic history of the Southern Maryland
region. There are general histories of Maryland, genealogical works,
microfilm, a subject vertical file, and various magazines and journals.
Types of microfilmed records include: population and
agricultural census data; land, court, church and marriage records; wills; and
tax assessments. Newspapers circulating in Southern Maryland are located
in room LR 210.
Some of the magazines and journal holdings include The
Calvert Historian, Chronicles of St.
Mary's, Maryland Genealogical Society
Bulletin, and The Maryland Historical
Magazine.
Books, magazines and other materials in the Reading Room are
non-circulating.
The Archive:
Materials in the Archive include manuscripts, oral
histories, and photographic collections. There are over 200 collections
consisting of personal papers, records of businesses and organizations,
historic site files, genealogical research notes, maps, architectural drawings,
newspapers, and other documents.

Online Collections
Catalog - SMSC's online catalog
contains information about the personal/family papers,
business/organizational records, rare book, photographic, and oral history
collections located in the Archive. Updated periodically.
CSM card
catalog - Search the entire library catalog. The catalog contains
information on materials located in the SMSC Reading Room. Call numbers
with an "Md" in the prefix indicate that the item is located in the Reading Room.
Ancestry Library
Edition - With more than 1.5
billion names in over 4,000 databases, Ancestry Library Edition
includes records from the United States Census; military records;
court, land and probate records; vital and church records;
directories; passenger lists and more.
Must be accessed within the
college's computer network.
HeritageQuest Online Database - A unique, growing collection
of research materials for tracing family history and American
culture. Must be accessed within the college's
computer network.
