K-12 schools in Maryland have been actively involved in service-learning since 1992.   However, Maryland community

colleges continue to search for ways to establish and maintain service-learning programs. In an effort to address this

issue, the College of Southern Maryland, Carroll Community College, Harford Community College, Howard Community

College, and Montgomery College, have collaborated to form Service-Learning in Maryland's Community Colleges

Consortium.  The goals of this program are:

                                       (1) to increase the number of Maryland Community College students participating in service-learning

                                       (2) to provide faculty incentive and faculty development programs at each participating college

                                       (3) and to gather data that supports the educational benefits of service learning

The main activities of this program that will help each college reach these goals are faculty training sessions, student

service-leadership workshops, ongoing consortium meetings, and community agency partnership fairs.  This program is

funded with the assistance of the Corporation for National and Community Service, Learn and Serve America-Higher

             Education Consortia grant.

Service-Learning in Maryland's Community Colleges Consortium will be hosting the 5th Annual Statewide Service-Learning Workshop for faculty and staff at  Anne Arundel Community College, Arnold, MD on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 from 9:30 am-3:00 pm.  The keynote speaker will be Dr. Robert Franco.

Dr. Robert Franco is Director of Planning and Grants at Kapi'olani Community College, University of Hawai'i. As a professor of anthropology, his scholarly research focuses on Samoan immigration and urban adaptation resulting in publications on educational, employment, health, and housing issues for Samoans in the United States. He also assisted in the development of two non-profit organizations that currently provide advocacy, research, and training opportunities for Samoans nationally and in Hawaii.

As a faculty member, faculty senate chair, department chair, assistant dean, community board member, campus planner, and grant writer he has worked to weave Service-Learning and Civic Engagement into the center of his institution's learning-centered mission and strategic planning. His training and technical assistance explicitly incorporates the perspectives of these multiple stakeholders.
