CSM Theatre Company Presents Shakespeare Classic, ‘The Tempest’ March 14-16

Calendar listing

The College of Southern Maryland’s Theatre Company will present William Shakespeare’s classic of “The Tempest” as its spring production March 14-16 in the Fine Arts Center at the La Plata Campus. This performance, which intricately weaves three stories into one play, combines drama, comedy and romance into a classic tale of revenge, betrayal, love and forgiveness.

“The Tempest” is the story of the sorcerer Prospero and his daughter Miranda, who have been stranded on an island for 12 years, and how Prospero gains his revenge on those who caused his abandonment. Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, was overthrown by his brother Antonio with assistance from Alonso, King of Naples.

Prospero and his 3-year-old daughter were set adrift in a makeshift boat which left them marooned on a magical island. There they meet Caliban, a tortured, deformed creature who helps them survive for the next 12 years, and Ariel, a spirit who Prospero set free from imprisonment in a tree.

Years later, Alonso and Antonio, their assistants and Alonso’s son Ferdinand unknowingly pass by the island on which Prospero is trapped as they are returning to Naples from the wedding of Alonso’s daughter to the King of Tunis. Prospero, aided by his magical servant Ariel, conjures a great storm causing the ship to wreck. As the various travelers land on shore, they soon find themselves caught up in confusion, betrayal, revenge and love.

CSM’s cast includes Andy Whetzel of Waldorf as Prospero, Bob White of Clinton as Alonso, Alex DeLeon of Waldorf as Antonio, Monica Monroy of Waldorf as Miranda, and Alex La Clair of La Plata as Caliban.

Performances are March 14 and 15 at 8 p.m., and March 16 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5. For information or reservations, contact the Box Office at 301-934-7828, 301-870-2309, 240-725-5499 or 443-550-6199, Ext 7828, bxoffc@csmd.edu or www.csmd.edu/finearts.
