CSM Sponsors Big Read Essay and Art Contests

The Big Read Essay Contest. Deadline April 1. As part of The Big Read, the National Endowment for the Arts national reading initiative, the College of Southern Maryland is sponsoring the CSM Big Read Essay Contest. Writers in Charles, St. Mary’s and Calvert counties are asked to highlight their individual, emotional growth as a result of reading Ernest J. Gaines’ novel, “A Lesson Before Dying.” Essays by writers ages 17 and younger should be 400 – 600 words, 18 years and older should be 750 – 1,000 words. All submissions must be postmarked by April 1 and need to include the submission form found at http://www.csmd.edu/TheBigRead/WritingEntryForm.pdf and a SASE. The Big Read Art Contest. Deadline March 29. As part of The Big Read, the National Endowment for the Arts national reading initiative, the College of Southern Maryland is sponsoring the CSM Big Read Art Contest. High school students in Charles, St. Mary’s and Calvert counties are asked to submit book covers relating their impression of Ernest J. Gaines’ novel, “A Lesson Before Dying.” Submissions should be no larger than 11 by 14 inches and can be in the medium of the artist’s choice. Submissions must be delivered or postmarked by March 29 and need to include the submission form found at http://www.csmd.edu/TheBigRead/ArtEntryForm.pdf. The artist’s name and piece title need to be posted on the back of the entry. Deliver entries to any CSM or public library in Charles, St. Mary’s or Calvert counties or College of Southern Maryland, Library, 8730 Mitchell Road, P.O. Box 910, La Plata, Md. 20646-0910.
