Middle, High School Students Start Smart through Educational Talent Search for Great Finish

Free Summer Workshops to Include College Visits, Field Trips

Middle and high school students will have challenging academic and enrichment opportunities as the “Smart Start…Great Finish XIV” returns this summer through the Educational Talent Search program offered at the College of Southern Maryland.

The program is free and open to Charles County public school students entering seventh and eighth grades as well as to entering high school sophomores through seniors. The middle school program will be offered June 17-27 while the high school program will be offered June 30-July 2 and July 7-18 at the college’s La Plata Campus. No sessions will be offered July 3 or 4.

The schedule includes SAT preparation test-taking, creative writing led by former Congressman and writer Major R. Owens, math and reading/writing skills enhancements, decision-making and career explorations. Tentative college visits are planned with CSM, University of Maryland at College Park, James Madison University, Mary Baldwin College, Virginia Union University, Randolph Macon College, Cheyney State University, Lincoln University of Pennsylvania and Delaware State University.

Trips are planned to the Newseum and Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. and the National Aquarium in Baltimore, and middle school students will have the opportunity to assemble a computer.
