Hoyer (D-MD) shortly before he presented the College of Southern Maryland with a ceremonial check for $286,899 for the development of the college’s trades and transportation training initiative. Hoyer visited the college’s La Plata Campus April 28 to present a check for $286,899 for the development of its trades and transportation programs. “In this nation, we need many different types of skills, but the skills of electricians, plumbers and artisans are too often lost or not perceived as an option. But, developing these skills can be incredibly rewarding, mentally and financially,” said Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) during his visit to the College of Southern Maryland’s La Plata Campus April 28. The congressman was on campus to present the college with a ceremonial check for $286,899 to assist in the development of the college’s new Boot Camp, a 10-week intensive training program designed to prepare entry-level employees for future apprenticeships as future electricians, carpenters and other trade professionals with local, regional and national employers.
On April 28, Congressman Steny Hoyer presented a ceremonial check for $286,899 to the College of Southern Maryland to help fund the college’s trades and transportation initiative. The initiative which is part of the college’s “Campaign for the Next 50 Years” seeks to create a regional center for trades and transportation. The funds secured by Congressman Hoyer will permit the college to jumpstart an innovative program to develop a 10-week Boot Camp that will prepare students for apprenticeships in carpentry, electrical and HVAC service careers. Trades and transportation careers are expected to remain one of the top 10 employment growth areas during the next decade. “This may only be a few thousand dollars but the students who benefit from it will turn this investment into millions and millions of dollars of returns to our society…I thank every taxpayer that supports this type of investment and guarantee you it will change lives,” said Hoyer.

Congressman Hoyer Encourages Community to Make Sound Investment in Community Trade and Transportation Skills
Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) presented the College of
Southern Maryland (CSM) with $286,899 for its Partnership for the Advancement
of Construction and Transportation Training program April 28. The program
provides courses and training to meet the growing demand in the construction
and transportation industries in Southern Maryland and provide workers with the
skills to stay competitive in today’s economy. The funds were appropriated in
the FY08 Omnibus Appropriations bill passed in December, 2007.
“In Southern Maryland and in areas across the country, we
are currently facing a severe shortage of skilled professionals in the building
and transportation trades,” said Congressman Hoyer. “Through the specialized
training offered through this program the College of Southern Maryland is
uniquely poised to respond to the specific workforce needs of our region and
equip workers with the skills they need to excel to the top of their trade.”
A good portion of the funding will be used for the
development of new curriculum for the construction trades, including a new
“boot camp” training model that prepares students for local apprenticeships in
carpentry, HVAC and electrical work. The 10-week program will provide
alternative training, particularly for the under-employed and unemployed
workforce in Southern Maryland, and will also be available for new high school
graduates.
“The need for trained professionals in the trades is
reaching alarming levels that threaten the well-being of Southern Maryland,”
said CSM President Dr. Brad Gottfried. “The funds secured by Congressman Hoyer
will permit the College of Southern Maryland to jumpstart an innovative program
that could be replicated across the country. We are deeply appreciative of
Congressman Hoyer and his commitment to Southern Maryland.”
Southern Maryland is the fastest growing region in the state
with a projected growth of 33 percent by 2015. The tremendous growth in the
residential and commercial building industries has resulted in an urgent
workforce need. The workforce shortage in both the construction and
transportation industries is reaching a critical point for employers in Southern Maryland, who depend on CSM to attract and train workers throughout the region.
As the College of Southern Maryland celebrates its 50th
anniversary, the CSM Foundation marks a major milestone in the college’s
history of the college with its “Campaign for the Next 50 Years.” The campaign
is raising $5 million to fund an Institute for Science, Technology, Engineering
and Math (ISTEM), a Regional Center for Trades and Transportation Technologies;
and initiatives to address local nursing and healthcare workforce shortages;
focus on educational excellence, and endow a student scholarship fund for
access and success. For information, visit www.csmd.edu/foundation or call

CSM, founded in 1958, is the fifth largest community college
in Maryland and grown to be the centerpiece of Southern Maryland with campuses
in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties and more than 21,000 annual
enrollments. For information about CSM, call 301-934-7765 or 301-870-2309,
