2017 Florida Travel Study Trip

November 17-19, 2017

Students use the Taxonomy of Nursing Practice and the nursing process to apply specialized skills in caring for child rearing families. Health promotion, maintenance, and restoration are emphasized as students provide family-centered care in a community-based setting. Students can complete their pediatric experience component of the course by traveling to Camp Boggy Creek in Eustice Florida over a three-day weekend. Camp Boggy Creek is “a camp where children with serious illnesses and their families can forget the word ‘no’ for a little while and embrace the promise of ‘yes’.” The camp fosters a spirit of joy by creating a free, safe, and medically sound camp environment that enriches the lives of children with serious illnesses and their families. With the support of student volunteers, each family is paired up with a family pal (student), who acts as a host for the weekend. Depending on the family’s needs, family pal responsibilities can include greeting families upon arrival, assisting them around camp, participating in family camp activities, playing with the children when the parents are in parent-only activities, helping the family and child with any needs that arise, and generally helping them to have the best experience possible.
