Certified Billing and Coding Specialist

Billing & Coding Specialists have many opportunities for employment in hospitals, physician offices, surgery centers, nursing homes, dental offices, home healthcare agencies, mental health facilities and even insurance companies and consulting firms. Skills  you will learn include: Gather/review essential patient information; Verify required documentation before patient information is released; Prevent fraud/abuse by auditing billing; Support coding and billing process, Assign codes for diagnoses and procedures; Submit claims for reimbursement; Coach healthcare providers to achieve optimal reimbursement. Completion of this CSM certificate prepares students to sit for the Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) certification from the National Healthcareer Association.

To complete the Certified Billing and Coding Specialist continuing education certificate you must complete the following courses:

  • HTH-6850 Introduction to Billing and Coding
  • HTH-6860 Basic Billing and Coding
  • HTH-6870 Advanced Billing and Coding

Prerequisite: Students must have a high school diploma or equivalent and be 18 years of age or older to take the certification exam.  Students must successfully complete the WorkKeys Assessment given in the CSM Testing Center with a minimum score of 4 on all three tests.

HTH-6850: Introduction to Billing and Coding

Have you ever questioned the charges on a medical bill? Learn how fees and charges are determined by starting your career in Medical Billing and Coding. Through this course you will begin building your knowledge base in medical terminology; anatomy and physiology; medical law and ethics; electronic medical records and health insurances in order to properly code and bill medical claims. Textbook required.

Prerequisite: Students must successfully complete the WorkKeys Assessment given in the CSM Testing Center with a minimum score of 4 on all three tests.

HTH-6860: Basic Billing Coding

Have you ever examined an explanation of benefits and not understand the numbers? Continuing on your path to medical coding and billing, this course is designed to expand your knowledge with electronic medical records and health insurances. Instruction of ICD-10 coding is introduced to enable you to convert medical terms and conditions into billable numbers. Textbook required.

HTH-6870: Advanced Billing and Coding

Complete your journey in medical billing and coding by developing skills and knowledge to file medical claims for reimbursement. The tools needed to differentiate between primary and secondary insurance plans to comparing and contrasting "clean" and "dirty" claims are learned throughout this course. You will also be taught the theory behind reconciling payments to accounts and follow-up actions to records as needed. Students will take the NHA Certified Billing and Coding Specialist certification exam at the successful completion of this program. Textbook required.

Prerequisite: HTH-6860, Basic Billing and Coding. Students must have a high school diploma or equivalent and be 18 years of age or older to take the certification exam.
