Electronic Health Records Specialist

Electronic Health Records Specialists (EHR), organize and manage health information data. They ensure that the information maintains its quality, accuracy, accessibility, and security in both paper files and electronic systems. EHR Specialists use various classification systems to code and categorize patient information for insurance reimbursement purposes, for databases and registries, and to maintain patients' medical and treatment histories.

To complete this continuing education certificate, you must complete the following classes:

  • HTH-7410 Introduction to Electronic Health Records
  • HTH-7420 Basic Electronic Health Records
  • HTH-7430 Advanced Electronic Health Records 

Prerequisite: Students must successfully complete the Work Keys Assessment given in the CSM Testing Center with a minimum score of 4 on all three tests. Please note this continuing education certificate has a 100% attendance requirement.

HTH-7410: Introduction to Electronic Health Records

Do you know what HIPAA is and how it impacts patients? Learn about the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 and how it pertains to individuals. You will also study medical terminology, and anatomy and physiology of the human body. Electronic Health Records (EHR) will be introduced during this class. This course of study prepares you to sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Electronic Health Record Specialist certification exam. Textbook required.

Prerequisite: Students must successfully complete the WorkKeys Assessment given in the CSM Testing Center with a minimum score of 4 on all three tests.  Please note this course has a 100% attendance requirement.

HTH-7420: Basic Electronic Health Records

Where do I find the patient demographics in their chart? Discover the different areas within the electronic medical record. Learn how to enter information, perform maintenance, transmit patient data and more! Managing databases, developing clinical templates and coordinating patient flow are also taught in this class. Textbook required.

HTH-7430: Advanced Electronic Health Records

Finish your journey to becoming a Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS). This course will teach you the insurance and billing basics needed to enter coding and billing information, diagnoses and procedural descriptions. Generating patient statements and posting payments to patient accounts are among the host of skills developed in this class. Preparation for the CEHRS exam will complete this course. Textbook required.
