Certified Clinical Medical Assistant

Clinical Medical Assistants are a vital part of clinical patient care. They perform tasks including preparing patients for the doctor, obtaining vital signs, collecting specimens (phlebotomy for example), performing EKGs, and assisting during exams and procedures to name a few. This field is continually growing with the expansion of doctor offices nationwide. Completion of this continuing education certificate results in sitting for the National Health Career Association (NHA) exam for a national certification as a Clinical Medical Assistant. To qualify for this certification, student must complete the following courses:

  • HTH-5330 Introduction to Clinical Medical Assisting
  • HTH-5340 Basic Procedures for Medical Assisting
  • HTH-5350 Advanced Procedures for Medical Assisting
  • HTH-6620 American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (HCP)

HTH-5330 Introduction to Clinical Medical Assisting

Have you ever been in your doctor's office and watched the staff while thinking you would like to do that job? Start your journey to become a Clinical Medical Assistant here. This course will teach you about human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, medical law and ethics, patient education, and more. This course, in conjunction with Basic Procedures for Clinical Medical Assisting and Advanced Procedures for Clinical Medical Assisting will prepare students to enter the workforce as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant. Textbook required.

Prerequisite: Students must successfully complete the Work Keys Assessment given in the CSM Testing Center with a minimum score of 4 on all three tests. Please note this course has a 100% attendance requirement.

HTH-5340 Basic Procedures for Medical Assisting

Do you know how to prepare a patient for a basic office examination by the doctor? How about scheduling patients for office appointments? This course will present the fundamental concepts and skills needed to become a Clinical Medical Assistant. You will role-play with other students in a simulated medical office. Skills included are administrative office functions, communication, medical records, billing, coding and insurance, patient assessment, vital signs and much more. Textbook required.

HTH-5350 Advanced Procedures for Medical Assisting

Is that a good vein for me to draw blood from? Complete your training as a clinical medical assistant. You will learn hands on skills necessary in a physician office. Highlights of this course include assisting with office exams and procedures, pharmacology, basic wound care, phlebotomy, specimen processing, CLIA waived testing, and EKG. Textbook required.

HTH-6620 American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (HCP)

Healthcare providers and professionals whose jobs require CPR as a condition of employment are encouraged to attend. Relief of foreign body airway obstruction, rescue breathing, CPR for victims of all ages, and the use of the bag valve mask and automated external defibrillator (AED) will be practiced. The signs of stroke, heart attack, and the prevention of SIDS and childhood injuries will be discussed. Participants successfully completing a written exam and a skills demonstration will earn an AHA card that is current for two years. Textbook required.

According to AHA guidelines: Participants must bring the current edition of the appropriate textbook to class and be present for 100% of the class.
