Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)/Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA)

A Certified Nursing Assistant or Certified Geriatric Nursing Assistant provides basic patient care under the direction of the nursing staff. A Nursing Assistant performs duties for patients in a healthcare setting, such as feeding, dressing, grooming, moving, and changing linens. This continuing education certificate consists of the following two classes:

  • HTH-6270 Nursing Assistant Fundamentals
  • HTH-6290 Nursing Assistant Practice

A student who successfully completes this continuing education certificate demonstrates application of comprehensive knowledge and skills of the nursing assistant in a clinical setting and meets eligibility requirements to become a certified nursing assistant through application to the Maryland Board of Nursing and to obtain their nursing assistant certification. In addition, students will take the geriatric nursing assistant competency exam to obtain certification as a geriatric nursing assistant. Students will complete a review of GNA skills in preparation for the NNAAP exam. Exam included in the cost of the course. Textbook required.

CNA/GNAs employed by a long-term care facility with at least one-year of experience may want to obtain Certified Medicine Aide (CMA) certification to obtain greater advancement.

The CNA HTH 6270 and the CNA HTH 6290 courses are set up according to the regulations set forth by the Maryland Board of Nursing. CNA students cannot mix and match practicums because the regulations require all practicum students to have completed a great portion of the content of the fundamentals curriculum, and multiple medical/background clearances before approaching any live patient in the practicum. When you register for HTH 6270, please register with the corresponding HTH 6290.
