The Phlebotomy Technician works in a healthcare setting such as a hospital or clinic and draws blood from patients or donors for analysis or other medical purposes. With further training, a technician can become a Medical Laboratory Technician or Technologist which prepares specimens, operates analyzers, and performs manual tests.

Prerequisite: Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers Card. CSM offers a course that meets this criteria if you do not already have it: HTH-6620 - AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Course

HTH-5000 Introduction to Healthcare

Are you looking for a career in healthcare? Obtain the tools to develop the personal, professional and workplace skills necessary to succeed in today's healthcare industry. Learn the healthcare system, its structure, laws, ethics, economics and patient care skills. You have the opportunity to learn and practice hands on patient care skills in our health education laboratories. The course ends with an overview of the most in demand healthcare career fields. Textbook required. Important note: Content is presented in the classroom, health laboratory and online settings. You will be required to meet in the classroom on the days shown and work in the online classroom for additional hours.

HTH-7210 Phlebotomy Technician

Enter the field of Phlebotomy. Learn about collection, preparation, and transportation of blood samples using aseptic techniques and procedures. Gain an understanding of patient safety, basic anatomy, infection control, patient preparation, and ethical considerations associated with venipuncture. With this course you will develop in-depth knowledge about working as a phlebotomist in a hospital, doctor's office, laboratory, and in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Textbook required.

Prerequisite: HTH-5000; An active American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers card is required prior to the start of HTH 7250 Phlebotomy Practicum, which must be taken in the same semester. Detailed immunization records and a criminal background check at the student's expense will also be necessary. Before clinical experiences at area medical institutions, students may be required to provide proof of current health insurance and/or a negative drug screen.

HTH-7250 Phlebotomy Practicum

Get hands-on, practical experience in the Phlebotomy field. Learn more about collection, preparation, and transportation of blood samples by observing in the workplace. An opportunity to continue practicing your skills, this course is designed to get you started on your way towards certification as a phlebotomy technician. Course culminates in sitting for national certification. The phlebotomy practicum is scheduled as 90 hours completed in two week increments during daytime work hours. Health Data forms, social media contract, and an online background investigation are required.

Prerequisite: HTH-5000; An active American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers card is required prior to the start of this class. HTH-7210 Phlebotomy Technician must be taken in the same semester. Detailed immunization records and a criminal background check at the student's expense will also be necessary.
