Choosing A Major at the Transfer Institution
For many students, the process of choosing a college starts with a decision about what
they want to do with their lives! What career or occupation have you chosen for yourself?
Although this is not usually an easy decision, enrolling in college demands that
a decision be made.
The importance of developing career focus cannot be overstated. Many students put off
making this difficult decision. The consequences of last minute transfer planning can
be disastrous. You may still have freshman and sophomore level classes to take after
you transfer, or you may have taken courses at College of Southern Maryland that are
not required or accepted by your transfer institution, or you may not have taken the
necessary prerequisites to begin your major.
The Advisement and Career Services Department
offers a variety of services and resources to help you develop your goals.
Schedule an appointment with a career advisor by calling 301-934-7574. The advisor will
discuss your interests, skills, and personality type as they relate to career and major decisions.
- STU 1050 - Career Decision Making and Life Planning
This three credit course offered every semester is designed to help students learn about
themselves and the world of work. Students will proceed through a career planning
process consisting of self-assessment, career exploration, decision making, goal
setting and planning.
- Visit the Career Center (AD-103)
The Career Center provides a variety of materials to assist with your career
preparation. Reference books provide information on all phases of career development,
from initial exploration of career possibilities to placement in a specific occupation.
Computerized career data bases are available for individual use or with the assistance
of an advisor. Written assessments such as the Self Directed Search, Strong Interest
Inventory and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator are also offered by appointment.
