Patuxent Habitat for Humanity

What is the Mission of Patuxent Habitat for Humanity?
The Mission of Patuxent Habitat for Humanity is to have a significant impact on our community by bringing people from all walks of life together in helping their neighbors in need to realize better lives by providing decent, affordable housing in both Calvert and St. Mary’s Counties.

When did Patuxent Habitat for Humanity begin?
Patuxent Habitat for Humanity was incorporated as a non-profit affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International in 2003 serving both Calvert and St. Mary’s Counties.

How does it work?
Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Patuxent Habitat for Humanity builds houses with the homeowners. Houses are sold at no profit to selected families with no interest loans issued over a fixed period. Costs of these houses differ relative to location, labor, land, and building materials. A Patuxent Habitat for Humanity house in the area averages approximately $110,000. Affordable monthly mortgage payments are repaid from 20 to 30 years and are used to support the construction of more houses.

How does the partnership with the selected homeowner work?
Patuxent Habitat for Humanity is not a giveaway program, but is a joint venture in which those who benefit from the housing ministry are involved in the work at various levels. Each selected partner-family is required to invest “sweat equity” hours into the construction of their house. This produces a feeling of homeownership among family members, and fosters the development of positive relationships within the community.

How can I become a Volunteer for Patuxent Habitat for Humanity?
Click here Volunteers are needed in every aspect of the organization from Administrative Assistance to do not need to have experience in building houses as training is provided on-site. Board of Director meetings are open to the public and are held monthly. Contact the office for dates and times.

Southern Maryland Red Cross

We are still recruiting people who want to make a difference as a volunteer and help people directly in the affected disaster areas without having to go to that location. With today’s technology we can effectively complete the Red Cross mission anywhere in the US without leaving Southern Maryland.

The Disaster Relief Call Center in La Plata is one of only 28 call centers in the nation. All calls will come in from the American Red Cross hotline, 1-866-GET-INFO, and a call agent (Red Cross Volunteers) will provide information, referrals and relief support to individuals and Red Cross units affected by disaster. This call center, which is a part of the 1-800-REDCROSS Network, provides volunteers living locally with the opportunity to assist disaster victims across the country over the telephone right here in La Plata.

The volunteer will be instructed with enough knowledge to help answer questions and or direct the victims to other resources.
