About Our Swimming Pool

The College of Southern Maryland's swimming pool, inside the PE Building of the La Plata campus, is twenty-five yards in length. Its depth ranges from 3½' to 12'. During Intermediate and Advanced swimming classes and Open Lap Swimming, it is divided into six lanes (each lane about 7' wide). During Open Swim hours, two or three lanes are reserved for lap swimming, and the rest of the pool is usually open for exercising and playing.

Our pool contains approximately 170,000 gallons of water, usually kept at a temperature between 83º and 84ºF. Chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) and state-of-the-art ultraviolet disinfection, along with continuous filtration, keep our pool clean and healthy.

Benefits of Ultraviolet Disinfection:

  • UV is effective on all viruses, bacteria and their spores.

  • UV prevents the buildup of chloramines, the source of most of the unpleasant odors and irritation in swimming pools.
