Southern Maryland Nonprofit Directory

Nonprofit Directory

The Nonprofit Institute is developing an online, searchable database of the 2,600+ nonprofits serving those who live, work, and play in Southern Maryland. The Southern Maryland Nonprofit Directory will be searchable by one or more counties as well as by the type of work the nonprofit performs. It will also include basic information about each nonprofit as well as details such as contacts, website links, and more. We anticipate launching the directory in advance of Giving Tuesday on December 1, 2020.

The idea of developing a directory was first raised during a St. Mary’s County Executive Directors meeting held earlier this year. It was in-person meeting if you can remember what those were like! The thought was to have an up-to-date, public facing directory available to nonprofit leaders and staff as well as potential donors looking for a favorite charity or a specific type of organization to support. Institute staff got to work exploring how such a directory could be compiled.

Tax exempt organizations, nonexempt charitable trusts, and section 527 political organizations file annual 990 tax forms. Form 990 is an Internal Revenue Service form that provides the public with financial information about a nonprofit organization. GuideStar by Candid. is an information service specializing in reporting on nonprofits by cataloguing the 990 tax returns of organizations that file a return. It also provides other nonprofit data and allows nonprofits to share information about boards, policies, and more.

While the GuideStar database is a tremendous resource of information about nonprofits nationwide, without a sizable annual fee, there is no way to adequately capture information specific to Southern Maryland’s nonprofit community. Our workaround will entail researching the region’s nonprofits and then developing a database that will reside on the Nonprofit Institute website.

The Southern Maryland Nonprofit Directory will be searchable by one or more counties as well as by the type of work the nonprofit performs. Contact information for the nonprofit will be provided along with a link to the organization’s website. Details pertaining to the organization’s tax-exempt status along with a link to their 990 may also be available through the directory.

This ambitious undertaking will take considerable time to develop. We hope to launch the directory in advance of Giving Tuesday on December 1, 2020. The Southern Maryland Nonprofit Directory will also be demonstrated during our annual conference in February, 2021.

Your input to the development of this new tool is welcomed. Please send your questions and suggestions about the Southern Maryland Nonprofit Directory to nonprofit@csmd.edu.
