CSM's May 6 Faculty Excellence Lecture Series ‘Provocations’ Explores ‘A Different Lens: Asian American Speech Communities’
The College of Southern Maryland’s (CSM) next 2021 Faculty Excellence Lecture Series, “Provocations,” will examine mental illness narratives, and how educators can help increase help-seeking behaviors of Asian American college students.
The May 6 “Provocations” series features Adjunct Professor of Communications Gina Johnson who will pose the question “How can Asian college students seek help for mental illness when doing so violates not only their value of collectivism but also their worldview?” She’ll also explore why these students would fear being labeled as a counseling patient when doing so might shame their family.
Although previous research has identified the differences between Asian and Western cultural approaches to help-seeking, Johnson proposes that further research is necessary to understand the gap between collectivist and individualist cultural approaches. Employing speech community theory and narrative paradigm theory, Johnson has established the framework for supporting “that effective intercultural communication can address this need through culturally trained counselors, and campus cultures that embrace the benefits of mental health service.”
The CSM Faculty Excellence Lecture Series was established to highlight and share the scholarly work and interests of CSM’s faculty with colleagues, students and community members.
