Military Medic/Corpsman to Associate Degree Transition Pathway

At CSM, we value your military experience as a Medic and/or Corpsman. The Military Medic/Corpsman to Associate Degree Nursing Transition Pathway at the College of Southern Maryland is designed to help you transition your experience and knowledge from the military into an associate's degree. After completion, you will be prepared to take the NCLEX exam to become a Registered Nurse.

The College of Southern Maryland and American Public University System are committed to assisting veterans, who have three years or more health care experience and training, in transitioning into nursing educational programs/careers after their service. Many veterans have valuable health care experience/education/training that facilitates this transition.

Prerequisite* Coursework for the Military Medic/Corpsman to ADN Transition Pathway

  • ENG 1010 Composition and Literature
  • BIO 2070/L Anatomy and Physiology I (with lab)
  • BIO 2080/L Anatomy and Physiology II (with lab)
  • BIO 2010/L Microbiology (with lab)
  • PSY 1010 General Psychology
  • SOC 1010 Introduction to Sociology
  • MTH 1115 or MTH 1120
  • NUR 1015 Introduction to Nursing

*Some coursework previously completed in military education may transfer—American Council on Education (ACE) approved courses; please see advisor for specific information. Courses completed via other educational institutions or entities may also transfer (ACE approved).

Upon completion of the prerequisite course work, students are eligible to petition for the Military Medic/Corpsman to ADN Transition Pathway at CSM.

Concurrently, students will apply for admission at APUS. Students will enroll in the six-credit transition course through APUS. This course emphasizes Fundamentals in Nursing and Adult Medical-Surgical Nursing.

Concurrently, students will enroll in NUR 1998L Military Medic/Corpsman Transition to Nursing Clinical at CSM. Through lab skill validation, simulation, and patient care in an acute care setting, this two-credit clinical course focuses on adults experiencing basic health alterations.

This transition coursework prepares you to enter the second year (Clinical Semester 3) of the associate’s degree nursing program.

Admission Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of experience in direct patient care within the past five years.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.0 in high school or in college (with at least 12 earned college credits)
  • Completion of all prerequisites
  • ATI TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) score of 59 or above. TEAS scores are considered current for 3 years.
  • Documentation of past or present status of a Navy Corpsman (HM3 course completed, NER-HM-004), Army 91WM6, or USAF4NO skill identifier
