Calvert County

Organization: Chesapeake Cares Food Pantry

  • Volunteer Position: Food Pantry Assistant
  • Dates: Weekday mornings and evenings
  • Student Capacity: 30-50
  • Description: Volunteers at the food pantry serve on the schedule every other week and dedicate their time in service with a specific team. The food pantry is open on Tuesday from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Wednesday 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m., and 5:30-7:30 p.m., and Thursday 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Volunteers provide service doing the following tasks: shopping for clients' groceries, loading groceries into vehicles, dividing bulk resources and traffic support.

Organization: Project ECHO

  • Volunteer Position: Turkey Trot Race Marketing Committee Member/Event Assistant
  • Dates: Committee meets every other Monday at 3 pm, beginning August 31. The Turkey Trot is Thanksgiving Day; help is needed day before and day of event
  • Student Capacity: 5-10
  • Description: The Marketing Committee Member responsible for spreading the word about the Turkey Trot. The Event Assistant sorts materials for the race e.g. t-shirts; bib numbers; and timing chips.

Organization: 2015 Walk to End Alzheimer’s

  • Volunteer Position: Walk Planning Committee Member/Event Assistant
  • Event date: September 19 (must sign up in advance of event)
  • Student Capacity: 20-30
  • Description: As a Committee Member, volunteers will help with the planning stages of the event. On the actual day of the event, volunteers are needed to help make the walk run smoothly.

Organization: Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum

  • Volunteer Position: Education Volunteer

  • Description: Assisting our staff and docents with the 4th grade field-trip program "Kid's Work," and other educational programming offered at the park; such as story times, workshops, and camps. The majority of time spent is outdoors. This is an opportunity to learn about out-of-classroom educational experiences and interpretation.

Organization: Patuxent Habitat for Humanity

  • Volunteer Position: Construction Volunteer
  • Dates: Flexible; Saturdays 8 am to 4 pm

  • Description: Help Calvert County Veterans with critical home repairs. Assist in the building process on-site, or help coordinate the construction process. Construction knowledge is beneficial but not necessary.

Charles County

Organization: Accokeek Foundation

  • Volunteer Position: Certified Organic Ecosystem Farm Assistant
  • Dates: Saturdays. Four hour shifts from 9 am to 1 pm.
  • Student Capacity: 20-30
  • Description: Volunteers will assist farm crew from 9 am to 1 pm with daily farm chores such as planting, weeding, pest management, and harvesting, and volunteers that commit to the full 4 hour shift will be eligible to take home produce as a thank you.
