2018 Belize Travel Study Trip

March 23-31, 2018

Through lectures, labs, and field studies, students will study the biology of marine life. Field work, principally snorkeling on the second longest barrier reef, centers on the coral reefs and adjacent communities, such as rocky shores, sandy shores, mangrove swamps, and turtle grass beds. Students will also explore the archaeology and artifacts of the ancient Maya and their influence and interchange with other ancient American cultures. Climb a pyramid, descend into a sacred Maya cave, and contemplate the glyphs and structures the Maya left behind in the lush jungle of this tropical paradise. In addition, students will enjoy cultural exchange with contemporary Belizeans of Mayan, British, Spanish and African descent. The center of operations for this program is Belize Marine Tropical Research and Education Center (TREC) in San Pedro on the small island of Ambergris Caye.
