Fall 2021 Nursing Curriculum Updates

Revised program of student for students currently enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing and Certificate Practical Nursing Programs

A revised program of study for students entering the nursing associate degree and practical nursing certificate programs will take effect beginning with the Fall 2021 Semester. The curriculum changes have been approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing and the appropriate College of Southern Maryland committees.

Current nursing students who enrolled in their program under the existing curriculum will be placed in the revised curriculum if they are unsuccessful at any point as they progress in the current version of the nursing program. The chart below details the progression for current nursing students who fail a course under the current curriculum:

If student fails the following course… - the student has the following option under the revised curriculum:

Students that are placed in the revised curriculum will be required to purchase the required learning resources for the new courses.

Course failures from the previous program of study will still count toward the Nursing Programs Progression Policies, which can be found in the Nursing Students’ Handbook.

Students with questions or concerns regarding the program changes can make an appointment with an academic advisor to discuss how the changes may affect them.

Students interested in the Associate Degree Nursing and Certificate Practical Nursing Programs

The changes were designed to provide students with an efficient and effective framework for the delivery of nursing content. The curriculum emphasizes safe, patient-centered care through use of the nursing process and clinical judgment as the central concepts. The revised curriculum can be found in the CSM catalog at:

Here are the important points to best prepare for petitioning to and completing the program.

Nursing Program Acceptance

Both the practical nursing certificate and associate degree nursing programs require one common pre-clinical nursing course. NUR 1050, Introduction to Professional Nursing (2 credits) must be completed with a minimum grade of C prior to receiving a letter of acceptance into the nursing program. The NUR 1050 requirement may be fulfilled by completion of both NUR 1015, Introduction to Nursing (1 credit) and NUR 1030, Issues of Older Adults (1 credit) with minimum grades of C, as long as the student is admitted to the nursing program by the Fall 2022 Semester.

Practical Nursing Certificate

Practical nursing students are now required to take PSY 1010, Introduction to Psychology (3 credits) and PSY 2050 (3 credits), Human Growth and Development Through the Lifespan.

Associate of Science in Nursing

  • Sociology Requirement
    • SOC 1010, Introduction to Sociology (3 credits) will be replaced by PSY 2050 Human Growth and Development through the Lifespan (3 credits).
    • Students that have completed SOC 1010 with a minimum grade of C may use this course to fulfill the requirement as long as they are admitted to the nursing program by the Fall 2022 Semester.
    • Students who have not yet completed SOC 1010 should plan to take PSY 2050.
  • Arts and Humanities Requirement
    • The six (6) credits of arts and humanities are now replaced by MTH 1015, Introduction to Statistics (3 credits) and PHL 1410, Topics in Contemporary Ethics (3 credits).
    • Students that have completed six (6) credits of arts and humanities with minimum grades of C may use these courses to fulfill the requirement as long as they are admitted to the nursing program by the Fall 2022 Semester.
    • Students who have not yet completed the arts and humanities requirement should plan to take MTH 1015 and PHL 1410.
  • Communications Requirement
    • The communications options (COM 1010, 1250, and 1450) will be replaced by COM 1350, Intercultural Communication (3 credits).
    • Students that have completed COM 1010, COM 1250, or COM 1450 with minimum grades of C may use these courses to fulfill the requirement as long as they are admitted to the nursing program by the Fall 2022 Semester.
    • Students who have not yet completed the communications requirement should plan to take COM 1350.
  • Algebra Requirement
    • MTH 1115, Applied College Algebra (3 credits) will be replaced by MTH 1120 or MTH 1120T, College Algebra (3 credits).
    • Students that have completed MTH 1115 with a minimum grade of C may use this course to fulfill the requirement as long as they are admitted to the nursing program by the Fall 2022 Semester.
    • Students who have not yet completed MTH 1115 should plan to take MTH 1120.
