Phlebotomy

 

The Phlebotomy Technician works in a healthcare setting such as a hospital or clinic and draws blood from patients or donors for analysis or other medical purposes. With further training, a technician can become a Medical Laboratory Technician or Technologist which prepares specimens, operates analyzers, and performs manual tests.

Prerequisite:

Students must be at least 18 years of age at time of registration.  A High School diploma or equivalent is required. Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers Card. CSM offers a course that meets this criteria if you do not already have it: HTH-6620 - AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Course

This continuing education workforce training certificate consists of the following courses:

  • HTH-5000 Introduction to Healthcare
  • HTH-7100 Phlebotomy Technician Training
  • HTH-7120 Phlebotomy Technician Practicum
  • HTH-6620 AHA Basic Life Support for HCP

HTH-5000: Introduction to Healthcare

Are you looking for a career in healthcare? Obtain the tools to develop the personal, professional and workplace skills necessary to succeed in today's healthcare industry. Learn the healthcare system, its structure, laws, ethics, economics and patient care skills. You have the opportunity to learn and practice hands on patient care skills in our health education laboratories. The course ends with an overview of the most in demand healthcare career fields. Textbook required.

HTH-7100 Phlebotomy Technician

Enter the field of Phlebotomy. Learn about collection, preparation, and transportation of blood samples using aseptic techniques and procedures. Gain an understanding of patient safety, basic human anatomy, infection control, patient preparation, and ethical considerations associated with venipuncture. With this course you will develop in-depth knowledge about working as a phlebotomist in a hospital, doctor's office, laboratory, and inpatient and outpatient settings. Textbook required.

Prerequisite: HTH-5000; An active American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers card is required prior to the start of HTH-7120 Phlebotomy Technician Practicum, which must be taken in the same semester. Detailed immunization records and a criminal background check at the student's expense will also be necessary. Before clinical experiences at area medical institutions, students may be required to provide proof of current health insurance and/or a negative drug screen.

HTH-7120 Phlebotomy Technician Practicum

Get hands-on, practical experience in the Phlebotomy field. Learn more about collection, preparation, and transportation of blood samples by observing in the workplace. An opportunity to continue practicing your skills, this course is designed to get you started on your way towards certification as a phlebotomy technician. Course culminates in sitting for national certification. The phlebotomy practicum is scheduled as 90 hours completed in two week increments during daytime work hours. Health Data forms, social media contract, and an online background investigation are required.

Prerequisite: HTH-7100 Phlebotomy Technician Training must be taken in the same semester. Detailed immunization records and a criminal background check at the student's expense will also be necessary. Before clinical experiences at area medical institutions, students may be required to provide proof of current health insurance and/or a negative drug screen.

HTH-6620: American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (HCP)

Healthcare providers and professionals whose jobs require CPR as a condition of employment are encouraged to attend. Relief of foreign body airway obstruction, rescue breathing, CPR for victims of all ages, and the use of the bag valve mask and automated external defibrillator (AED) will be practiced. The signs of stroke, heart attack, and the prevention of SIDS and childhood injuries will be discussed. Participants successfully completing a written exam and a skills demonstration will earn an AHA card that is current for two years. Textbooks are provided at no additional cost.

According to AHA guidelines: Participants must be present for 100% of the class.

HTH-7130 Phlebotomy Technician Refresher

This 8 hour refresher course is designed for phlebotomists medical assistants who want to
review foundational concepts in phlebotomy, seek to improve and update venipuncture techniques, develop critical thinking skills in various healthcare settings and reinforce strategies to be successful on the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) certification examination. Textbook required.
