Summer STEM classes at the Velocity Center

Building something unforgettable this summer with free STEM programs for kids and teens!

Kids and teens can innovate, create, and discover—for free!—with week-long summer STEM experiences for ages 7 to 14 from Kids’ & Teen College at the College of Southern Maryland.

These in-person, hands-on classes run Monday through July 5 through August 5 at CSM’s Velocity Center in Indian Head.

Best of all, these fun and engaging summer programs are free! Tuition and fees are waived for Charles County residents, thanks to the support of Charles County (limit one free course per student).

Ages 7-10

Elementary Lego Engineering (KTC-8040)
July 7-8, July 18-22, or July 25-29

This exciting hands-on engineering class uses LEGO Education building materials. Students will learn the basics of engineering and simple machines. You will be introduced to the concepts of pulleys, levers, gears and more. From this foundation, move on to compound machines, motorized vehicles, and robotic creations. You will also get a chance to put your new knowledge to work creating your own mechanized design. 

All About Technology (KTC-8030)
August 1-5

Fun, exciting, and challenging activities await you as you are introduced to a variety of relevant technologies. Students will build circuits as well as build and program robotic devices. Use a Global Positioning System to play a high-tech game of hide and seek.

Ages 11-14

3D Printing for Teens (KTC-5010)
July 5-8, July 25-29, or August 1-5

Build a foundation in 3D modeling by designing simple models, then watch them print out right before your very eyes. Create your model from scratch or import a more intricate design as a starting point. As you create your masterpiece, you'll learn to operate and maintain your 3D printer. The best part? You'll take home everything you printed out and have the skills and tools to keep going.

VEX IQ Robotics (AAY-5450)
July 18-22

Using the versatile VEX IQ ROBOTICS kit, learn to build a multitude of models to explore robotics design.  Design robots to overcome different challenges including those that have been used in previous VEX IQ ROBOTICS national competitions.
