Summer STEM classes at the Velocity Center

BUILD SOMETHING UNFORGETTABLE THIS SUMMER WITH FREE STEM PROGRAMS FOR KIDS AND TEENS  

Kids and teens can innovate, create, and discover—for free!—with week-long summer STEM experiences for ages 7 to 14 from Kids’ & Teen College at the College of Southern Maryland.

These in-person, hands-on classes run Monday through Friday, July 6 to 23 at CSM’s Velocity Center in Indian Head (except for the week of July 4, during which classes are running Tuesday through Friday due to the July 4 holiday).

Best of all, these fun and engaging summer programs are free! Tuition and fees are waived for Charles County residents, thanks to the support of Charles County. (Limit one free course per student.)

KTC-8040 Elementary Engineering (Ages 7-10) 

This Elementary Engineering course introduces students to the basics of engineering and analyzes the major impact engineers have had on the world as we know it. Students will learn concepts of force, measurements, construction, design, and much more.  Students will be challenged to create unique machines using their knowledge of technology and design. This exciting hands-on engineering class uses LEGO Education building materials.

AAY-5490 VEX Robots & Simple Machines (Ages 11-14) 

Using the versatile VEX IQ Robotic kit, you will build a multitude of models to explore robotics design. First exploring and manipulating simple machines, the building blocks of all robotics, then graduating to remote-controlled robots. You will design robots to overcome different challenges, including those that have been used in previous VEX IQ Robotics national competitions. This team-based engineering class gives you the tools to problem solve using the “Think, Do, Test” design process.
