You may have heard about CSM's recent partnership with Earlbeck Gases and Technologies of Baltimore, and we are updating our welding curriculum, course descriptions, course numbers, and course names to reflect current welding industry standards. Below, you will see more specific information about the different welding processes and certifications available. We will also be offering weld testing in addition to our welding courses.

Completers of our introductory welding program will be able to go into the welding field as an entry-level welder able to work under the supervision of an experienced welder.

CSM offers six tracks to become a certified welder: Certified Shielded Metal Arc Welder (SMAW), Certified Shielded Metal Arc Pipe Welder, Certified Gas Metal Arc Welder (GMAW), Certified Gas Metal Arc Pipe Welder, Certified Gas Tungsten Arc Welder (GTAW), and Certified Gas Tungsten Arc Pipe Welder.

Workforce Training Certificates

Certified Shielded Metal Arc Welder

To complete the Workforce Training Certificate for Certified Shielded Metal Arc Welder, you must complete:

  • TEC-5010 Fundamentals of Welding
  • TEC-5040 Intermediate Shielded Metal Arc Welding

Certified Shielded Metal Arc Pipe Welder

To complete the Workforce Training Certificate for Certified Shielded Metal Arc Pipe Welder, you must complete:

  • TEC-5010 Fundamentals of Welding
  • TEC-5040 Intermediate Shielded Metal Arc Welding
  • TEC-6000 Advanced Shielded Metal Arc Pipe Welding

Certified Gas Metal Arc Welder

To complete the Workforce Training Certificate for Certified Gas Metal Arc Welder, you must complete:

  • TEC-5010 Fundamentals of Welding
  • TEC-5060 Intermediate Gas Metal Arc Welding

Certified Gas Metal Arc Pipe Welder

To complete the Workforce Training Certificate for Certified Gas Metal Arc Pipe Welder, you must complete:

Certified Gas Tungsten Arc Welder

In this condensed and basic introduction to welding, the student will examine the principles of welding safety, safe and proper set up and use of welding equipment, and the use of proper protective equipment (PPE) when welding. Novices will acquire the basic techniques in SMAW, GMAW, and GTAW processes and will practice each process under a certified trainer. Basic welding gear and tools will be provided.

In this course, the trainee will recognize the importance of welding safety, take an AWS welding safety test, and apply safety training to practical welding in the welding lab. Trainees will be able to analyze joint design and weld types and define terms. Metallurgy properties, weld regions, welding stress, corrosion resistance, and welding symbols will be examined. Trainees will experience a brief overview of Oxyacetylene welding, brazing, and cutting. A review of non-destructive weld testing is also included. Trainees will perform the safe setup of welding equipment and practice SMAW, GMAW, and GTAW processes. A welder's kit is provided. Textbook included.

Welder trainees will advance their skills in SMAW process. Through classroom and lab instruction, training emphasis is placed on proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), proper and safe setup, use, and care of welding equipment, and the trainee's ability to prepare material and perform welding of fillet and groove welds on carbon steel using E7018 electrodes in all positions. Welding practice is designed to follow Structural Welding Code vertical and overhead tests. Upon successful completion of the course, a welding test piece is submitted for certification. Textbook included.

Welder trainees will advance and adapt their skills in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) processes to pipe welding. The trainee will be trained in techniques required of a certified pipe welder. Through classroom and lab instruction, training emphasis is placed on proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), proper and safe setup, use, and care of welding equipment, and the trainee's ability to prepare material and perform proper tacks and feather edging, filler metal angles, and manipulations for open root pipe welding. Training will consist of E6010 root and hot pass with E7018 low hydrogen fill and cap. Welding practice is designed for certification to ASME IX, Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code in the 6G position on carbon steel. Upon successful completion of the course, a welding test piece is submitted for certification. Textbook included.

Welder trainees will advance their skills in Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) processes. Through classroom and lab instruction, training emphasis is placed on proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), proper and safe setup, use, and care of welding equipment, and the trainee's ability to prepare material and perform welding of fillet and groove welds on carbon steel in all positions. Welding practice is designed to follow the Sheet Metal Welding Code overhead test and Structural Welding vertical and overhead tests. Upon successful completion of the course, a welding test piece is submitted for certification. Textbook included.

In this advanced course, welder trainees will advance and adapt their Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) processes to pipe welding. The trainee will be trained in techniques required of a certified pipe welder. Through classroom and lab instruction, training emphasis is placed on proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), proper and safe setup, use, and care of welding equipment, and the trainee's ability to prepare material and perform proper tacks and feather edging, filler metal angles, and manipulations for open root pipe welding. Training will consist of welding on carbon steel pipe with the GMAW Short Circuit and FCAW (flux cored) processes. Welding is performed with ER70S solid wire short circuit transfer GMAW down bead root with E71T-1 flux cored wire hot and fill passes, upward progression. Welding practice is designed for certification to ASME IX, Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code in the 6G position on carbon steel. Upon successful completion of the course, a welding test piece is submitted for certification. Textbook included.

Welder trainees will advance their skills in the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) process. Through classroom and lab instruction, training emphasis is placed on proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), proper and safe setup, use, and care of welding equipment, and the trainee's ability to prepare material and perform flat, horizontal, and vertical fillet and flat groove welds on carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Welding practice is designed to follow the AWS D17.1 Specification for Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications. Upon successful completion of the course, a welding test piece is submitted for certification. Textbook included.

In this advanced course, Welder trainees will advance and adapt their Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) processes to pipe welding. The trainee will be trained in techniques required of a certified pipe welder. Through classroom and lab instruction, training emphasis is placed on proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), proper and safe setup, use, and care of welding equipment, and the trainee's ability to prepare material and perform proper tacks and feather edging, filler metal angles, and manipulations for open root pipe welding. Training will consist of welding on carbon steel pipe with the GTAW process. Welding is performed with ER70S carbon steel solid wire with upward progression. Welding practice is designed for certification to ASME IX, Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code in the 6G position on carbon steel. Upon successful completion of the course, a welding test piece is submitted for certification. Textbook included.
