The Phlebotomy Technician works in a healthcare setting such as a hospital, clinic, or patient service center in an outpatient laborartory and draws blood from patients or donors for analysis or other medical purposes.

career infoWith further training, a technician can become a Medical Laboratory Technician or Technologist which prepares specimens, operates analyzers, and performs manual tests.

Prerequisite: Students must be at least 18 years of age at time of registration.  A High School diploma or equivalent is required, as well as a current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers Card. CSM offers a course that meets this criteria if you do not already have it: HTH-6620 - AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Course. HTH-5000 Introduction to Healthcare is required prior to HTH-7100.

This continuing education workforce training certificate consists of the following courses:

  • HTH-7100 Phlebotomy Technician Training
  • HTH-7120 Phlebotomy Technician Practicum

With this course you will develop in-depth knowledge about working as a phlebotomist in a hospital, doctor's office, laboratory, and inpatient and outpatient settings. Textbook required.

Prerequisite: HTH-5000; An active American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers card is required prior to the start of HTH-7120 Phlebotomy Technician Practicum, which must be taken in the same semester. Detailed immunization records and a criminal background check at the student's expense will also be necessary. Before clinical experiences at area medical institutions, students may be required to provide proof of current health insurance and/or a negative drug screen.

Get hands-on, practical experience in the Phlebotomy field. Learn more about collection, preparation, and transportation of blood samples by observing in the workplace. An opportunity to continue practicing your skills, this course is designed to get you started on your way towards certification as a phlebotomy technician. Course culminates in sitting for national certification. The phlebotomy practicum is scheduled as 90 hours completed in two week increments during daytime work hours. Health Data forms, social media contract, and an online background investigation are required.

Prerequisite: HTH-7100 Phlebotomy Technician Training must be taken in the same semester. Detailed immunization records and a criminal background check at the student's expense will also be necessary. Before clinical experiences at area medical institutions, students may be required to provide proof of current health insurance and/or a negative drug screen.

Healthcare providers and professionals whose jobs require CPR as a condition of employment are encouraged to attend. Relief of foreign body airway obstruction, rescue breathing, CPR for victims of all ages, and the use of the bag valve mask and automated external defibrillator (AED) will be practiced. The signs of stroke, heart attack, and the prevention of SIDS and childhood injuries will be discussed. Participants successfully completing a written exam and a skills demonstration will earn an AHA card that is current for two years. Textbooks are provided at no additional cost.

According to AHA guidelines: Participants must be present for 100% of the class.

The American Heart Association (AHA) HeartCode BLS is a two-part blended learning course designed for healthcare professionals seeking an alternative method for obtaining or renewing BLS credentials. Upon completion of the online AHA BLS written portion, students will come to the college and participate in a structured, instructor-led, hands-on session that focuses on meaningful skills practice, and will include AHA guidelines for personal protective equipment (PPE) and Infection control, debriefing, team scenarios, discussions of local protocols, and skills testing. Students must register and complete the AHA online BLS course at www.heart.org prior to the start of class. Students must bring a copy of their online AHA BLS certificate to class. Separate fees apply. Participants who successfully complete the online written examination and skills evaluations will receive a course completion card valid for two years. Textbook provided.
