Counseling Corner

Counseling Corner

Midterms are right around the corner. Counseling Services has put together a few tips to help you prepare for success:

Set time aside to study
Lay out your materials and create a schedule for reviewing the information.

Take care of your body
In addition to getting plenty of sleep the night before the exam, nourish yourself with wholesome foods. Avoid foods that increase anxiety, such as processed foods and caffeinated beverages.

Avoid negativity
There will always be people who want to entertain you with horror stories of their experiences in a class or complain of their lack of preparation. Their experience is not yours. Instead, focus on your strengths and abilities.

Remember that some anxiety is normal
Anxiety symptoms result from the body mobilizing its systems to meet a challenge or threat. When properly managed, anxiety can provide the mental and physical energy needed to perform your best.

For more guidance on managing test anxiety, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with Counseling Services. On the La Plata Campus, call Ann Penick at 301-934-7577 or e-mail to On the Leonardtown and Prince Frederick campuses, call Jennifer Fossell at 240-725-5328 or 443-550-6169, or e-mail to

Student Volunteers Needed!

Student Volunteers Needed!

CSM is looking for student volunteers to participate in the Pulse of Southern Maryland public opinion telephone poll. Participating in Pulse is a great opportunity for students to gain self-confidence and a beginning skill set for dealing with the public as a professional.

Telephone surveys will be conducted on November 7-10, 6 - 9 p.m., at the La Plata Campus, Community Education (CE) Building, Room 202.

Participants will be provided with scripts, pre-printed surveys, and sheets of telephone numbers. Complimentary pizza will be served. Due to a limited number of spaces, electronic pre-registration is required. All students who participate in the opinion telephone poll will be entered into a drawing to win one of four Visa Cards worth $50 each.

The results of the survey will be published in Southern Maryland Newspapers. For more information, contact Pat Schroeder at
