Chautauqua 2018: Seeking Justice

Experience History Firsthand

July 10 - 12, 6:45 p.m.
La Plata Campus, Fine Arts Center (FA Building), Theatre

It’s summer in Southern Maryland, that means it’s time for Chautauqua! This FREE living history performance comes to the La Plata Campus Fine Arts Center each July, and this year’s theme is “Seeking Justice.” This 24th season will celebrate those who have contributed to the search for justice by bringing three activists from American history to life.

Frederick Douglass, July 10, 6:45 p.m.
A writer, orator, and abolitionist, but above all, was one of the most important African-American activists of the 19th century. The Maryland icon will be portrayed by Bill Grimmette, a living history interpreter, storyteller, actor, and motivational speaker.

Eleanor Roosevelt, July 11, 6:45 p.m.
A humanitarian, diplomat, and the longest serving First Lady in American history, but she was also an important advocate for justice. She will be portrayed by Susan Marie Frontczak, a writer, speaker, living history presenter, and storyteller.

Thurgood Marshall, July 12, 6:45 p.m.
A civil rights activist from Baltimore who broke barriers as the lead NAACP attorney in Brown v. Board of Education and as the first African-American Supreme Court Justice. He will be portrayed by Brian Anthony Wilson, a film and television actor and producer who will perform a scene from the play Thurgood by George Stevens, Jr., followed by a dialogue with Lenneal Henderson.

Chautauqua is presented by Maryland Humanities in partnership with College of Southern Maryland with support from Old Line Bank.
