HawkTalk - December 2019 Edition - Enroll Now for Enhanced Security

Hawk Hint

Extended Service Hours

Take advantage of extended hours from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. December 18 and January 14 and 15. We will be offering the following services those days: Admissions; Testing; Advising (opens at 9 a.m.); Financial Assistance; Registration/Registrar; IT Help Desk; Student Account Services.

Enroll Now for Enhanced Security

It’s time to think about safety. Starting December 1, CSM is activating and requiring Multi-Factor Authentication, or MFA, and Passphrase Protocols for your Office 365 account. From that point on, you will have to enroll and use your MFA access to all your Office 365 services, but your my.CSMD.edu and myLearning logins will not be affected.

MFA has become essential as we all deal with online phishing scams, malicious software, and compromised passwords. All of those things are big risks to your privacy and security. MFA will be an extra layer of security to your CSM account, providing much stronger assurance that your information is only accessible to you, the intended person. Also, we’ll be able to make sure our systems and services are always completely available and secure for students, faculty, and staff.

After recent Technology Support Team (IT) security audit findings, there will be changes to the required user passwords. Password will be referred to as a passphrase. Passphrases are strongly recommended in IT security protocol. For example, instead of a password “csmhawk”, use a passphrase such as “iloveCsmhawks.”

To get started, students and staff need to sign into portal.office.com; you will automatically be prompted to enroll your device.

Get more info on the Multi-Factor Authentication webpage or you can contact the IMT Help Desk at 301-934-7740 or help@csmd.edu.

The Tuesday after Thanksgiving is #GivingTuesday, and it’s the perfect time to choose the College of Southern Maryland Foundation. This year, #GivingTuesday is December 3, and you can celebrate student success by showing your generosity during this 24-hour online giving event.

Your support helps CSM students work toward their degrees, certificates, or the mastery of a new skill set. Gifts of every size from people like you help change lives right here at home in Southern Maryland.

Get Ready to Give in Leonardtown

Get Ready to Give in Leonardtown

Stop by Building B in Leonardtown and pick a name off the Angel Tree so you can get a gift for a local child in need. The tree is available through December 9 in the Student Association Offices, Rooms 104 and 105.

All of the gifts must be turned in by December 9. Then, come back and help wrap the gifts during the annual Holiday Party on December 10, from noon to 4 p.m.

Holiday Party

Holiday Party

Speaking of that holiday party, celebrate the holidays with fellow students during the Leonardtown Student Association’s Holiday Party from noon to 4 p.m. December 10 in Building A, Auditorium, on the Leonardtown Campus. You can hang out with fellow students, staff, and faculty for this annual party where donated gifts are wrapped for local children in need.

Use this party as a way to de-stress before final exams while giving back to the community. You can even see a diverse swath of holidays on display that are celebrated throughout the year. This is a catered event.

Anyone interested in creating a display can contact Student Life Coordinator Jennifer Van Cory at jenv@csmd.edu or 410-991-8506.

Let’s Take Care of Each Other

Let’s Take Care of Each Other

The College of Southern Maryland is assessing how to best address food insecurity that may exist among our student population.

Help us determine how to best serve our students who may be experiencing food insecurity by completing this survey. It is completely voluntary, anonymous, and will only take about five minutes of your time. Your participation is extremely important, and the results of this survey, in part, will be used to determine if establishing a student food pantry will be pursued in the near future.

Take a Break from Stress

Take a Break from Stress

Take a deep breath. You can do this. Finals are here, but you’ve got support. Take a second to relieve some of your stress with Student Life!

Stress breaks are scheduled at La Plata, Leonardtown, and Prince Frederick campuses, so you can spend a little time thinking about things other than tests.

On December 11 from 5 to 7 p.m., come to the Campus Center (CC Building) Lobby of the La Plata Campus to paint a canvas. You can paint a holiday-themed picture in a fun environment. Each participant gets an easel and art materials. This event is a first come, first served basis, so make sure to sign up- there is a limited number of seats.

On December 12 from 2:30 to 4 p.m., we’ll be in the Campus Center (CC Building), Lobby of the La Plata Campus, for hot cocoa drinking and gingerbread house building.

If you’re on the Leonardtown Campus on December 11, head to the Building C, Lobby between 4 and 6:30 p.m. and again on December 12 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. We’ll be handing out stress relief bags to students.

If you’re studying on the Prince Frederick Campus on December 11, go to the John E. Harms Academic Center (Building A), Lobby between 2 and 6 p.m., or on December 12 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. You can take a break from stress and enjoy a doughnut with your choice of coffee, hot cocoa, or tea.
