The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) encourages the use of placement test preparation materials for the placement tests. There are a limited number of times that an individual can take the placement test, so reviewing these preparation materials will be

Work Keys Assessment

The Work Keys exam is a test of essential work skills in three areas:  Applied Mathematics, Graphic Literacy, and Workplace Documents.  Each section of this computer based test has a maximum time limit of 55 minutes.  The cost for the Work Keys exam is $45. Payment can be made using this online form, or by completing the paper form located at the bottom of this page.

Scheduling Information:

  • La Plata administers the Work Keys exam by appointment only.  Call 301-934-7657 or stop by the Testing Center in LR 114 to schedule your test.  
  • Leonardtown administers the Work Keys exam by appointment only. Call 240-725-5340 or stop by the Testing Center in A109 to schedule your test.
  • Prince Frederick administers the Work Keys exam by appointment only.  Call 443-550-6040 or stop by PF 102 to schedule your test.

Adult Basic Education (ABE)

Adult Basic Education (ABE) describes a level of capability on the placement tests. Students who receive this placement need to improve their reading, math, and language skills before they begin coursework at the College of Southern Maryland (CSM). If your placement test scores specify placement at the ABE level, you will be required to do supplementary work prior to retesting and/or starting college classes.


  • Charles County residents: The Lifelong Learning Center at the Robert D. Stethem Educational Center in Pomfret offers classes during the mornings, afternoons and evenings.  Sessions are small and learning is individualized to meet the needs of each student. All areas of basic reading, writing and math are covered as well as areas needed for the External Diploma Program and GED. Additionally, the Lifelong Learning Center offers tutoring through the Learning Resource Center on the La Plata Campus. For more information, contact:
  • Calvert and St. Mary’s County residents: The College of Southern Maryland now provides low/no cost Adult Basic Education (ABE), GED Preparation, and English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction. These classes are small and learning is individualized to meet the needs of each student.  Students who tested at ABE level on their placement tests may be able to find tutoring assistance through this program.  For more information, contact the College of Southern Maryland Adult Education Program

      • PLATO is an online tutorial program available 24/7. E-mail a request to the Learning Resource Center at for access to PLATO.  Include the following information in your request:
        • Full name (first, middle, and last)
        • CSM student ID number
        • "PLATO Test Prep" in the Subject line.
        • Please state in your e-mail request which module(s) you need:
        • Math placement test review
        • English placement test review
        • Reading placement test review
        • You will receive a response to your request with instructions once your access has been granted. Please allow up to 3 business days to process your request.
    • Classes
      • Contact Lifelong Learning or the College of Southern Maryland regarding course offerings.

  2. Retake the placement test and test out of the ABE
  3. Enroll in CSM
