Transcript Evaluation for Transferring Credits to CSM

If you’ve previously earned college credits from another institution and want to transfer to CSM, you’ll need to submit your official transcript and a transcript evaluation request.

Timing is Key.

Transcript evaluation for your previous coursework can take four to six weeks so be sure to submit your official transcript and the transcript evaluation request in a timely manner. Missing these deadlines can delay the evaluation process.

  • Fall semester: July 15
  • Spring semester: Dec. 1
  • Summer semester: May 1

To have your previous college coursework evaluated, you must submit both your official transcript(s) and the Transcript Evaluation Request form; requests for transcript evaluations will not be considered complete until CSM receives all required documentation.

Sending Transcripts to CSM

All physical transcripts must be in the original, sealed envelope issued by the institution. Electronic transcripts must be sent directly from the institution to CSM’s Registrar’s Office via a secure electronic delivery system. CSM is unable to accept unofficial, unsealed, or scanned/photocopied transcripts for evaluation.

Have your previous institution(s) send your official transcripts to CSM using one of the methods below.

  • Mail: College of Southern Maryland
      Attn: Registrar’s Office
      8730 Mitchell Rd.
      P.O. Box 910
      La Plata, MD 20646

If sending multiple transcripts, you only need to submit one Transcript Evaluation Request. Be sure to include all relevant institutions under the question "List the names of the college institutions you will be requesting official transcripts from." Transcripts will be reviewed in the order they’re received.

Transcript Evaluation Process

The evaluation process will begin when we have received both your transcript(s) and Transcript Evaluation Request form. This process can take up to 20 business days.

The maximum number of credits will be transferred to CSM. If you have taken more credits than you’re eligible to transfer to CSM (75% of the credits required for the program you selected on your Transcript Evaluation Request), priority will be given to courses that apply to your chosen program.

Transfer Evaluation System

You can preview how courses will transfer to CSM using the Transfer Evaluation System (TES), an interactive tool that lets you compare course descriptions and see classes that have previously been evaluated by our academic departments. If a course is not listed in TES, it doesn’t mean it’s not eligible for transfer; it just means we haven’t evaluated it yet. You can help expedite the evaluation process by submitting course syllabi to transeval@csmd.edu for any of your courses that aren’t in TES.

Transcript Evaluation Report

Once your transcript evaluation is complete, we will email you a confirmation and instructions on how to log into your my.CSMD account to track your progress.

The Transfer Summary will show you which courses have transferred into CSM. If a course was denied for transfer, you will see a "grade," which will tell you the reason it was denied.

  • TD0 - Program Requirement Already Fulfilled
  • TD1 - Not Applicable to Program
  • TD2 - Unique Discipline or Course
  • TD3 - Does Not Meet Objectives/hrs
  • TD4 - Developmental Course
  • TD5 - Graduate Level Course
  • TD6 - Institution Not Accredited
  • TD7 - Unsatisfactory Grade
  • TD8 - Course in Progress
  • TD9 - Received Credit at Another Institution
  • TDP – Transcript Evaluation Pending
  • TDN - Request to Not Evaluate
  • TDT - Credit Through Testing
  • TDL - Credit Limit Reached

You may also see a course coded as “GENR.” This means that while the course is not equivalent to a course offered at CSM, it can be used to fulfill an appropriate general education requirement.

You can appeal a decision regarding the transfer of credits through CSM’s transfer appeal procedure

Course Substitutions

In rare cases, a student may be excused from taking a required course in their program of study. A course substitution is only initiated by an advisor and approved by the Division of Learning. To see if you qualify for a course substitution, please meet with an advisor.
