CSM’s Sip & Swing Offers Fun, Flavor, and Philanthropy at the 34th Annual Golf Classic

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Foundation’s Sip & Swing, sponsored by the CSM Alumni and Friends Connection and the Southern Maryland Women’s League, brought together friends, alumni, and community supporters for an afternoon of golf-inspired fun, local wine, and creativity in support of CSM student scholarships. Held on August 7 at Swan Point Yacht and Country Club as part of the 34th Annual CSM Foundation Golf Classic, the Sip & Swing offered guests a lively and engaging alternative to the traditional tournament while contributing to the day’s fundraising success.
Forty-five participants began the afternoon on the putting range, taking swings on miniature golf–style holes that brought a playful twist to the course. After the friendly competition, guests enjoyed wine from a local winery paired with assorted cheeses, crackers, and other treats. Lunch followed, leading into a creative session where participants painted terracotta pots and received sunflower seeds to plant at home, serving as a cheerful reminder of the day’s impact.
Since its inception in 2015, the Sip & Swing has been sponsored by the Southern Maryland Women’s League and has raised $40,566 for student scholarships. Andrea Sanford, president of the Southern Maryland Women’s League, said the League’s commitment to the college is rooted in community pride and personal connection. “From the start, our goal has been to make higher education possible for students in our own backyard,” Sanford said. “We created our scholarship fund to help single parents and children of single parent households because we know how challenging it can be to cover the costs of education. Education is the key to opportunity, and we want to open that door for as many students as possible.”
The League has been a committed partner to CSM since establishing its scholarship in 2009, and over the past 16 years has awarded $57,937 to 51 students. The scholarship provides financial assistance for tuition, fees, and books to a parent or child of a single parent household. Students must reside in Southern Maryland, be enrolled at least part-time, and submit an essay describing personal hardships and challenges. Preference is given to students who demonstrate financial need, and the award can be renewed for a second academic year if the recipient remains in good academic standing.
Brenda Lowe, the League’s Scholarship Grants Chairwoman and Member Emeritus of the CSM Foundation Board, has overseen the group’s scholarship program since its inception. “Watching students that we have supported walk across the graduation stage is the best reward. One thousand dollars may not sound like much to some, but to a student it can mean the difference between staying enrolled or having to pause their education,” said Lowe.
Toni Kruszka ‘11, CSM Director of Development, said the Sip & Swing adds a special dimension to Golf Classic fundraising. “This event shows there is a place for everyone to get involved,” Kruszka said. “Whether out on the course or enjoying an afternoon of wine and creativity, participants of this event help support the educational journeys of CSM students. It is a fun and meaningful way to connect with our mission and make a difference.”
