Bookkeeping is a branch of accounting responsible for recording the financial transactions and activities of a business. Bookkeepers record these transactions in the book of accounts, maintain supporting summaries and documentation, and produce reports as required. Bookkeepers need to have good planning and organization skills with a strong attention to detail in order to maintain expenditures, payroll, income and tax requirements for a business.

The Cloud and Information Technology degree is a program designed to provide students with the essential technical and communication skills required for entry-level employment in the vast field of cloud and information technology (IT).
This program includes coursework that will help students to prepare for entry-level CompTIA certification exams in A+ and Network+. Students also prepare for the Amazon Web Services (AWS) exam in Cloud Practitioner. With further study, students may also be prepared for CompTIA Security+ and AWS Solutions Architect certifications.

Computer Science is an exciting, challenging, and growing field that impacts the world and everyday life in countless ways.
Computer scientists are involved in creating technology and systems that are used in a wide range of industries, including medicine, communications, entertainment, manufacturing, business, and science. CS research pushes the state-of-the-art in computing theory and practice, and it leads to new technologies that change the world, such as the personal computer, the internet, cell phones, social media, and much more, as well as new discoveries in science and engineering, new possibilities for social science and the humanities, and creative collaborations with the arts.

The Criminal Justice program option is designed for students planning to transfer to a four-year institution and to complete a bachelor's degree in criminology, criminal justice, or one of the many related fields. It prepares students who plan to ultimately serve the community on a local, state, or national level in the fields of law enforcement, parole and probation, juvenile justice, corrections, or criminal justice research.
These programs enable students to qualify for positions as police, security, or corrections officers and also serves those already in the field who wish to update or advance their skills. They also provide several opportunities for civilian personnel; evidence technician, social worker, substance abuse counselor, child support agency worker, law librarian, etc., and serve as a strong foundation for journalist, politicians, and community leaders.

Learn More About This ProgramElectrical Helpers learn to perform tasks supporting Electricians and do preparatory work for the installation and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment. Electricians install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures while ensuring that work is in accordance with relevant national electrical codes. Electricians may install or service street lights, intercom systems, or electrical control systems.
After completion of the Electrical Helper workforce training certificate, you may continue your studies of the trade with our Electrical Technician workforce training certificate.
Learn More About This ProgramThe Associate of Science in Engineering (ASE) in Electrical Engineering degree is designed as a transfer degree for those seeking to pursue a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
For students transferring into four-year engineering program in Maryland, this degree transfers as a block of courses rather than on a course-by-course basis. Upon completion of the ASE in Electrical Engineering course of study, graduates will enter the four-year institution as a junior electrical engineering major.

People’s lives often depend on the quick reaction and competent care of Emergency Medical Technicians and paramedics.
CSM’s Emergency Medical Services Associate of Applied Science degree program prepares graduates to provide this critical emergency pre-hospital medical care to those who have sustained potentially life-threatening illnesses and injuries.
Completion of CSM’s Paramedic Certificate program qualifies graduates to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic (NREMT-P) examinations.

The first semester is the same for all students in this program. The first semester is designed to provide all students with a firm foundation for the study of engineering technology. After the first semester, students select an area of concentration from one of the following fields: Drafting, Electronics, or Robotics.

The fire science technology program prepares graduates to function as entry-level, fire service personnel and provides the degree associated with advancement within the fire service for career personnel currently employed as firefighters. Employment opportunities include positions as firefighters, fire officers, fire prevention officers, code enforcement officers, fire rangers, and crash and rescue technicians.
This program is a partnership between the College of Southern Maryland, which provides the general education courses, and Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute (MFRI), which provides the technical courses at sites in Southern Maryland. Credits for MFRI courses will be transferred into the college based upon the recommendation of the American Council on Education as published in the current edition of the National Guide to Educational Credit for Training Programs.

For recent high school graduates or returning students who plan to transfer to the upper division of a college or university to earn a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree, thse programs offers a broad-based curriculum drawn from the range of disciplines traditional to college-level liberal arts education.
Learn More About This ProgramCSM’s Health Information Management program offers students two paths of study: the Medical Coding Certificate and an associate degree in Health Information Management. Students don’t have to choose one option or the other; the course of study is continuous. The coursework that graduates complete to earn the Medical Coding Certificate fulfills requirements for the Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Management. Conversely, students in the study track for the associate degree will earn their Medical Coding Certificate as part of their program, with no additional courses required.
Graduates of the Medical Coding Certificate track are prepared to sit for the Certified Coding Associate exam, while the associate degree track prepares graduates for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam.

CSM’s Home Inspection Training TEC-5670 Home Inspection Training meets the requirements for home inspection pre-licensure for the State of Maryland. Students must also pass a test administered by PSI Examination Services before applying for a Home Inspector license with the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation.

This program is offered through a partnership between the College of Southern Maryland, which provides the general education courses, and the Seafarers Harry Lundberg School of Seamanship (SHLSS) which provides the technical courses. Individuals must be members of the Seafarers International Union at the Harry Lundberg School of Seamanship. Successful students will be prepared for variety of career opportunities in a maritime career.
There are two options in this degree program: Nautical Science Option and Marine Engineering Option. The Nautical Sciences Option gives students the theoretical and practical background necessary to work on the deck and in the wheelhouse of today's modern vessels. The Marine Engineering Option is designed to give students both the theoretical and practical background necessary to work in the engine rooms of today's modern vessels.

This two-year program, including one summer session, prepares you to work as a member of a diagnostic health care team as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT). MLTs perform routine and automated procedures under the supervision of a medical technologist or pathologist.

Students will take the foundational 1st and 2nd year courses in music theory and ear training, music history, and can choose to participate in a variety of music ensembles such as band, chorale, chamber choir, barbershop chorus, and Latin ensemble. The music ensembles consist of CSM students and community participants. Electives include private lessons and music history electives such as jazz, rock music, and American music. Students can experience a variety of performing opportunities throughout the year in recitals and concerts.

A subspecialty of radiology, nuclear medicine uses small doses of radioactive substances, called nucleotides, to visualize the condition and functioning of organs and tissues.
The Nuclear Medicine Technology program is offered through an articulation agreement with Prince George’s Community College. This is a competitive admissions program, with 25% of total program spots held for CSM students.
Learn More About This ProgramThe college has been offering the Nursing Associate degree for 30+ years and the Practical Nursing Certificate Program for 40+ years. First year students can take classes at any of the college's campuses in La Plata, Leonardtown or Prince Frederick. Students in the second year of the nursing associate degree take nursing courses on the La Plata Campus. Students studying for their Practical Nursing Certificate must also complete their program of study at the La Plata Campus.
During their nursing program, students participate in class activities, clinical experiences, and in-lab experiences. Program graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) or for the Practical Nurse (NCLEX-PN).

Pharmacy technicians stock and inventory prescription and over-the-counter medications; maintain written or computerized patient medication records; count or pour medications into dispensing containers; prepare sterile intravenous medications; type prescription labels, prepare insurance claim forms; and provide direct customer service. Pharmacy technicians work in hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, home healthcare pharmacies, nursing home pharmacies, clinic pharmacies, nuclear medicine pharmacies, and in mail order prescription pharmacies, and other practice settings.

The care a patient receives during recovery has tremendous implications for their immediate health and overall, long-term wellbeing. Physical therapist assistants not only provide direct treatment; they accompany their patient and the patients’ social and medical support networks on the journey to recovery.
This program prepares the student to provide physical therapist assistant services according to the plan of care developed by the physical therapist. The physical therapist assistant administers direct patient care; teaches patients, families, and other healthcare providers how to perform selected procedures; and provides desired psychosocial support to patients and their families. Physical therapist assistants are employed primarily in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, private practice, extended care facilities, and home healthcare settings. Graduates are eligible to take the national licensing examination.
This program is sponsored by the Chesapeake Area Consortium for Higher Education (CACHE), which is comprised of the College of Southern Maryland, Chesapeake College, and Anne Arundel Community College. Students complete their general education requirements at the College of Southern Maryland, their physical therapist assistant labs at Anne Arundel Community College, and their clinical practice in their local service area when possible. Distance learning technology is used as appropriate. Students who complete the program receive an associate’s degree from the College of Southern Maryland and are eligible to take the national licensing examination for physical therapist assistants.

Modern radiographers use a host of x-ray techniques to produce these images.
The Radiography, AAS program is offered through an articulation agreement with Prince George’s Community College (PGCC). This is a competitive admissions program, with 25% of total program spots held for CSM students. Students’ coursework at CSM provides their general education and the scientific foundation underlying their occupational courses, which they take through PGCC.
The Radiography program equips graduates with the knowledge and skills to produce accurate, reliable images using a variety of x-ray techniques and technologies.

Patients in their care may suffer from a diverse array of health conditions, from the everyday to the extraordinary, like asthma, emphysema, pneumonia, bronchitis, COVID-19, lung cancer, or cystic fibrosis. Whatever the underlying cause, the respiratory therapists’ treatment is no less vital to the patient’s wellbeing and quality of life.

The Social Sciences at CSM consist of a set of diverse yet intertwined disciplines. We have extremely well trained professors, with teaching and research experiences from across wide swaths of the social sciences, which greatly benefits our students in the classrooms. Our faculty in the Social Sciences also represent the diversity we experience across the U.S., the greater DMV region, and that we increasingly are witnessing in southern Maryland and on the Campuses of the College. The Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) degrees in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education are part of a statewide articulation designed to transfer seamlessly to any public four-year school in Maryland. Private universities and out-of-state universities also accept these degrees.
The AA: Teacher Education: Secondary Education includes all of the core courses as well as introductory teacher education courses and content area courses to prepare students for transfer.
