Sharpen your skills at CSM! The Arts program at the College of Southern Maryland is structured as a bedrock foundation for creative individuals in pursuit of creative opportunities.

Through a broad curriculum, CSM art students are exposed to many disciplines and styles as preparation for advanced studies and careers.

The Arts at CSM are always active, whether it's painting, working with clay, developing film, creating illustrations, or any way you choose to engage with the arts.

Programs of Study

This associate of arts program option is designed for students with a specific academic interest in art. This option prepares students for a specific concentration at a four-year Maryland state college or university.

The Photography, AAS degree prepares students for a challenging career path that integrates the disciplines of the photographic arts and digital technology. The graduate is prepared to perform a variety of technical photographic functions including working with both digital and film cameras; understanding contemporary studio lighting techniques; editing and outputting images with current software and with traditional materials; managing images with an appropriate workflow; and maintaining photographic equipment in a professional manner. Additionally, graduates will receive a strong foundation in the formal elements of design, as well as an understanding of the history of image making in the visual arts.

This certificate will prepare students for careers in the multifaceted field including advertising, commercial photography, media publications, design, commercial printing, graphic imaging and fine art, as well as other areas that link the artistic formation of printed communication and technical processes.

Graphic Design Certificate

This certificate provides an education in the methods and concepts of photography. It is designed for students with an interest in fine art or commercial photography. The photography certificate provides a foundation for entry-level careers in commercial photography. The certificate may also be the first step of an educational progression which includes a related associate in arts degree and potential transfer opportunities.

Photography Certificate

This course work will prepare an individual to work as a docent in a museum or assistant in an art gallery. Course content includes learning about historic art trends, artists, and styles. This program is available fully online.

Art History Letter of Recognition

This course work prepares an individual to work in a childcare or nursery school environment, a public school art program as a teaching assistant or to volunteer in a hospital, church, or community center. Course content includes basic drawing and design as applied to a variety of media.

Transfer Opportunities

CSM graduates with an AA in Art are primed to transfer to a four-year college or university art program.
