Steps to Enroll as a Credit Student

Take the next step on the path to success at the College of Southern Maryland.

Whatever your goals for yourself, find your path to educational and professional achievement at CSM. Earn your associate degree, earn credits for transfer, or take advantage of our many partnerships and articulation agreements on your way to your bachelor’s degree. An education that can take you anywhere starts here.

Steps to Enroll

Your CSM education begins with a three-step process: apply to CSM, check your college readiness, and register for your classes.

Apply to CSM

The first step in becoming a CSM student is to apply for admission.

CHECK College Readiness

A strong start in your first semester builds momentum and confidence. Find the courses that fit your knowledge and abilities by: taking the CSM Placement Test; submitting your scores from the SAT, ACT, GED, or Advanced Placement standardized tests; providing your high school transcript; or showing completion of prior college-level English or Mathematics coursework.

Register for Classes

Once you’re accepted to CSM, register for your classes and start turning promise and potential into reality.

Your college education is a new and exciting chapter in your life. Whether it’s been months or years since you’ve been a student, there’s a lot to learn and you probably have lots of questions. If you haven’t decided yet on which program to pursue, we suggest you take the Career Coach assessment and make an appointment with an advisor to review the results.

Arrange payment for any outstanding balance on your account by the payment due date. You can pay your balance in full or enroll in the CSM Tuition Payment Plan to pay your bill in monthly installments.

Life can be full of detours, but it’s never too late to get back on track, and the CSM community is excited to welcome you back. Your education is a path that leads to endless possibilities and opportunities, and you won’t be traveling alone. We’re here to guide you and accompany you on the road to success.

Partnership with ReUp

CSM has partnered with ReUp Education to reach out to former CSM students who have had to put their studies on pause.

The ReUp coaching team will support you through the re-enrollment process and work with you to determine what you need to be successful in your chosen degree path at no cost to you.

If you have been identified to participate in our ReUp partnership, a Success Coach will reach out to you.

Some students may need to provide additional documents or information based on their circumstances. See below for any requirements relevant to you. Not sure which category applies to you? Contact one of our Enrollment Coordinators for assistance.

If you have not earned college credits before applying to CSM, you are a new, first-time student. Applying as a new, first-time student doesn’t require additional steps or information aside from what’s mentioned above.

We want to make it simple to pick up where you left off with your studies.

If you are currently enrolled at another institution, you can take courses at CSM and transfer the credits you’ve earned back to your home institution.

  • If you are a new student, you will need to submit an admissions application. After your application is confirmed, you will be issued a student ID number.
  • If you are planning to use financial aid, you must declare a major similar to the major at your primary/degree-granting institution. Financial aid will not be awarded without a major being declared.
  • Email, visit Advising on-campus, or call the Hawk Hub at 301-934-7574 to meet with an academic advisor.
  • If course has a pre-req, you must provide an unofficial transcript and complete a Pre-Req Waiver Form. If pre-req is not currently in CSM database, a syllabus will be required.
  • After the steps above have been successfully completed, you will be granted permission to register.
