Velocity Center Receives Grants to Launch Manufacturing Workforce Training

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is expanding pathways into advanced manufacturing careers through new workforce training and apprenticeships initiatives. 

CSM received a $52,000 grant as part of TEDCO’s Makerspace Initiative Program, which supports the establishment, expansion, or development of Makerspaces across Maryland.  

At the Velocity Center, the funding will support new instructional equipment and three new courses designed to provide students with instructional training and hands-on learning for manufacturing careers. Students who complete the courses will be prepared to pursue the Certified Manufacturing Associate (CMfgA) credential and build technical skills to meet growing workforce demands in defense, aerospace, precision manufacturing, and fabrication industries.  

Executive Director Lesley Quattlebaum said this investment represents an important step in expanding the Velocity Center Makerspace as a regional workforce development resource. 

“We are creating accessible pathways for individuals to earn valuable credentials and prepare for rewarding careers in advanced manufacturing,” Quattlebaum said. “This initiative strengthens our commitment to meeting regional workforce needs while helping employers build the skilled talent pipeline essential to Southern Maryland's economic growth." 

CSM is also partnering with JobForward through a nearly $1 million grant to expand registered apprenticeship opportunities and strengthen the advanced manufacturing workforce.  

The $5 million statewide initiative is awarded through the Maryland Department of Labor’s Industry Apprenticeship Accelerator Grant Program. It aims to develop 14 new registered apprenticeship programs, recruit nearly 150 employers, and add more than 650 apprentices in critical positions.  

Through this partnership, JobForward will support CSM in developing and implementing an advanced manufacturing Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP). As a program sponsor, CSM will help employers launch and sustain apprenticeship programs by managing program administration, compliance, and coordinating training.

CSM is one of several regional partners supported by JobForward through the grant. The funds will support CSM in developing apprenticeship standards, obtaining state approvals, and building the infrastructure necessary to serve as a RAP sponsor. The initiative supports new career pathways and employment opportunities within the region while helping employers address critical workforce needs.
