Velocity Center at Indian Head

The new CSM Velocity Center, operated and managed by CSM, is a place of innovation, learning, and collaboration for academia, the Navy, and the community.  This collaborative learning space supports workforce development and economic growth in Southern Maryland.

The facility is approximately 13,000 square feet located outside of the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head Division (NSWC IHD) The Navy utiltizes the Center for conferences, meetings, showcases and to hold a multitude of professional development activities and events.  Navy scientists and industry leaders can interact with students in tech transfer courses and have a place to tinker and conduct unclassified research.  The community can take advantage of the Makerspace in the Velocity Center as well as workforce and professional development courses such as Computer Aided Design, Cyber Security, Drones/Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Government Procurement, Social Entrepreneurship and Tech Transfer Entrepreneurship, etc.

velocity-floorplan.jpgThis project has been embraced by the Federal government, the Southern Maryland Delegation, the MD Dept of Commerce, as well as the Town of Indian Head, the Charles County EDD, and the Charles County Chamber of Commerce.

The CSM Velocity Center helps educate, train, expand, and retain the talent pipeline for Southern Maryland and the state as well as assist in professional development and collaborative projects between academia, industry, and government. This approximately 13,400 square foot facility  accommodates the following types of activities:

Large conference room area

Conference and Meeting Space

  • Large conference and meeting space with seating for a maximum of 280 people using a variety of seating configurations
  • Two 24-seat classroom/seminar rooms 
  • An 8-seat boardroom-style conference room with high-definition video conferencing 
Small meeting room

Shared Flexspace and Workspace

  • Flexspace for Navy research, ideation, and design supporting small learning workshops and seminars, vendors’ showcases, technology transfer, and projects
  • Shared office space that can be rented by the day or week  
  • Workspace designed for contractors or visitors who have business in Indian Head for short periods of time
Makerspace area

Makerspace

  • A collaborative work space for making, learning, exploring, and sharing 
  • Will be equipped with a variety of maker equipment including 3D printers, laser cutters, subtractive machines, soldering irons, and more 
  • Hardware and software for cyber/gaming, CAD modeling, simulation, app development, robotics, and prototyping 

NSWC IHD personnel and guests at the CSM Velocity Center have access to wireless high speed internet and video teleconferencing capability, as well as connectivity for external computer hook up, large screen projection systems, ceiling mounted projectors, microphones, and podiums in all meeting/classroom and seminar spaces. The building also includes a warming/service kitchen with sink, refrigerator/freezer, and microwave.

Additionally, the CSM Conference Center in La Plata, MD, just 12 miles from NSWC IHD, offers more than 10,000 square feet of outstanding meeting space, including board rooms, customized general session rooms, breakout rooms, a banquet hall, and a computer lab with 20 work stations. The Conference Center can accommodate groups from 3 to 300. 

The CSM Velocity Center is a catalyst for other businesses to locate near the Center and outside the base to support the Navy and the community.
