Ward Virts Concert Series: Antony Zwerdling

American baritone, Antony Zwerdling, is an active performer of opera, oratorio, and recital repertoire. He has performed over twenty‒five operatic roles, including Papageno in Zauberflöte, Marcello and Schaunard in La Bohème, Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus, and Sid in Albert Herring. His credits include Washington National Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, In Series, Boston Lyric Opera, Maryland Lyric Opera, Lake George Opera, and Opera Lafayette.
As an Oratorio soloist, Zwerdling’s repertoire includes Messiah, the requiems of Brahms, Mozart and Fauré, A Child of Our Time (Tippet), The Harvest of the Quiet Eye (Sowash), and St. Matthew Passion. He has sung with Washington Bach Consort, Thomas Circle Singers, Handel & Haydn Society, Cathedral Choral Society, Symphony Orchestra of Northern Virginia, Baltimore Symphonic Chorale, and Philharmonia Baroque. He has also presented several recitals, most notably for Music at Penn Alps and Ward Virts Concert Series.
Zwerdling received his Bachelors degree from Northwestern University and Masters from Boston University. In 2007, he earned his Doctorate from Shenandoah Conservatory, writing about songs of Samuel Barber. He teaches on the voice faculty at Hood College and College of Southern Maryland in addition to maintaining a private studio.
