Her work has been funded by the Pulitzer Center and and has appeared in Sierra, Longform, and Booth, on NPR, and elsewhere. Her memoir, "Animal You'll Surely Become," was published by Tolsun Books in 2018.

Hailer is from Southern Maryland where her father struggled with alcoholism. Her lyric essays explore place and family history. She will discuss how to interrogate a family system and reinvent scene and story from family interviews and memory.
