Real Students, Real stories: IN THEIR OWN WORDS

Real Students, Real Stories

THIS WEEK HEAR FROM:
Andre Curry
Accounting

“Community college has truly been a lifesaver. It has allowed me to pursue skillsets that will help me reach my goals. It is my ambition to pursue a career in the accounting field directly upon graduating. My plan is to use accounting as a steppingstone; eventually, I would love to have my own business.

I can’t express how much the Men of Excellence program has been a benefit to my life and academic career. We have weekly meetings where we speak on a vast array of topics, from our own lives and experiences, to history and current social issues.

There’s a saying: ‘A single conversation with a wise man is worth a month’s study of books.’ I’ve found our meetings to be therapeutic, a means of sharpening the intellect, and a medium to receive different perspectives on topics I perhaps never considered.”

STUDENT RESOURCES

CYBERSECURITY AWARENESS MONTH: SMART HOME DEVICES

"Smart” home devices are convenient, but they also present their own set of vulnerabilities. Connecting locks, lights, appliances, and cars to the internet can expose them to hacking, infection by malicious software, and even legal—albeit unscrupulous—data-mining on your activities. Protect yourself with good digital hygiene and habits:

  • Only Connect What You Need: Does your toothbrush really need to connect to the wireless network?
  • Read the Fine Print: Know what you’re agreeing to by connecting smart devices.
  • Someone’s Always Listening: Voice-activated devices are always listening to everything you say.
  • Stay Updated: Manufacturers use firmware updates to fix security vulnerabilities. Check for updates regularly.
  • Strong, Unique Passwords: The Golden Rule of cybersecurity. Use strong passwords and don’t recycle them.

CSM College Survival Guide

At CSM, no hawk has to fly alone. The College Survival Guide is a recurring feature that directs members of the CSM community to free resources and support for whatever challenges they may be facing.

TRYING TO FIGURE OUT YOUR BENEFITS AND OPTIONS AS A VETERAN? CSM is proud to serve those who’ve served. Veteran and Military Support can guide you through your college experience, from readjustment to civilian life to getting the most out of the benefits you’ve earned.

Student health 101

This online health and wellness magazine is your resource on nutrition, career advice, articles like "Adulting 101: Master the skills they don’t teach you in school," and more. View the current issue now and sign up to receive the Student Health 101 email each month.
