IMPORTANT VETERANS BENEFITS UPDATES

If you’re a recipient of education benefits under the Post-9/11 GI Bill® (Ch. 33), you may be affected by recent policy decisions from the federal Department of Veterans Affairs:

The COVID-19 incentives regarding online courses have not been renewed. For terms starting after Dec. 17, 2021, you’ll be required to take on-campus classes; this includes Face-to-Face, Hybrid, and Hy-Flex.

If you receive a monthly housing allowance and/or kicker payments, you’ll need to verify enrollment at the end of each month for terms starting after Dec. 17, 2021.

For more information, check your CSM student email, visit CSM’s Veteran and Military Support page, or contact the college’s Veterans Affairs team.

Real Students, Real stories: IN THEIR OWN WORDS

Real Students, Real Stories

THIS WEEK HEAR FROM:
Destini Baldwin ‘14
CSM alum
Program Coordinator for Student Equity and Success at CSM

“I graduated from Westlake High School and started college out of state, but after my scholarship ran out after a couple semesters, I told my parents, 'I don’t want to have to pay all this money once I finish school, I don’t want you all to have to figure out how to get me through school, so I’m gonna come back to CSM.'

My professors had a big impact on me. They definitely changed the way I looked at my talents. I never used to see myself as a 'creative' person, but I was in a graphic design class and I turned in this one assignment, and my professor told me, 'Wow, just—wow, this is amazing. Like, you could get paid for this.'

That was the first time it clicked for me, that I had these skills, and sure, it was fun, but—wow, I’m actually really good at this, I have skills that people need and appreciate.

Since I was a student at CSM, it’s easy for me to put myself back in that position, that mindset, and look at how things are running from a student’s perspective. Now I’m focusing on how I can combine my experiences as a student with my professional expertise to better support our students and help them reach their goals, and support other staff who are helping students.

Ever since I was young, I’ve always loved being around people with more experience than me, because they inspire me to get to where they are. Now, at the college, I’m surrounded by so many people who inspire me. It’s got me thinking about going back to school to get my master’s and continue my education.”

STUDENT RESOURCES

CSM College Survival Guide

At CSM, no hawk has to fly alone. The College Survival Guide is a recurring feature that directs members of the CSM community to free resources and support for whatever challenges they may be facing.

NOT SURE YOU CAN AFFORD GROCERIES? It’s hard to focus on your studies and your goals when you’re not sure where your next meal is coming from. CSM’s Hawk Pantry and Hawk Feeder micro-pantries are available on the La Plata, Leonardtown, Regional Hughesville, and Prince Frederick Campuses for students experiencing food insecurity.

Hawk Feeders are drop-by micro-pantries that are always available while the college is open.
The Hawk Pantry is a new opportunity for current students to receive up to 30 pounds of food per week.
