Artist Gretchen Schemerhorn’s new exhibition, “Perception,” will be on display at the Tony Hungerford Memorial Art Gallery at the La Plata Campus from Jan. 25 to March 8. REAL STUDENTS, REAL STORIES: IN THEIR OWN WORDS

anita-horace-grad-pic.jpegThis week, hear from Anita Horace from the Class of Winter 2022, who graduated with high honors with her Associate of Arts in Arts and Sciences!

My story isn’t different from many other mothers who decide to further their education once their children are grown up.

When I got married, I promised myself that when my kids were at a certain age, I would go to college. After being out of school for so many years, I was nervous and did not know what to expect, especially in a classroom with students the same age as my own children.

But I grew up hearing my mom say, 'You’re never too old to learn.' My kids were so supportive, too: 'Yea, Mom! Go for it!' So, with the encouragement of my family, I enrolled at CSM. I was tremendously blessed with compassionate and dedicated instructors. When I was going through a personal crisis and unable to complete my work, I spoke with my professor, Dr. Cicero Fain, who was kind and understanding. Professor Marian Steinbach always encouraged us, made herself available outside class to answer questions, and ensured we were mentally prepared for our exams. Professor Michael Green challenged me to stretch my mind and think deeply about what a question was asking.

I like this quote from Michelangelo, something he said in his 80s: 'I am still learning.' Living and learning go hand in hand. It keeps us young and our brains active.

CSM, thanks for the memories, and for being part of my remarkable journey. Being steadfast, hardworking, and focused pays off in the end, and my journey is just getting started.
