Equity in Action at CSM: Disability Support Services

yellow line

July 26 marked the 35th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and CSM maintains its staunch commitment to eliminating barriers to both access and achievement in higher ed:

  • CSM’s Disability Support Services (DSS) wrote 186 disability accommodation plans for the spring semester and expects more than 200 accommodation plans this fall.
  • Since adding a question about disability to the admissions application, more than 50 incoming students have requested accommodations for the upcoming semester.
  • The most common disabilities at CSM are so-called “invisible” disabilities: ADHD, anxiety, depression, and autism and other learning differences.
  • DSS now offers one-on-one campus tours for prospective students.

Contact Disability Support Services to learn more and to request a disability accommodation plan.

Fun fact: Southern Maryland’s own Rep. Steny Hoyer was the lead sponsor of the ADA in 1990, as well as the ADA Amendments Act in 2008.

Real Students, Real Stories: Bree Kekesi

Real Stories - Bree KekesiThis week, HawkTalk features Bree Kekesi ’23, student speaker for the School of Health Sciences:

“I would say, deep down, that I’m an advocate, both for myself and others. I’ve come a long way, and I wouldn’t be here if not for CSM—and for fighting for what I believed in.”

The College Survival Guide is a recurring feature that directs members of the CSM community to free resources and support for whatever challenges they may be facing. At CSM, no hawk has to fly alone.

NEED AN ACCOMMODATION FOR A DISABILITY? Disability Support Services is here to ensure equitable access to education for all our students. DSS assistance isn’t limited to physical or “obvious” disabilities, either; students living with “invisible disabilities” like dyslexia or ADHD can also get the support they need.
