Seven CSM Student-Athletes Make NJCAA All-Academic Teams
Seven student-athletes from the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) were named to the 2019-20 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Academic Teams for maintaining a grade point average (GPA) above 3.6, the NJCAA announced last Friday.
Sophomore Katelyn Kluh, member of the CSM’s volleyball and women’s basketball teams, and sophomore Sierra Walker with CSM’s women’s cross country team were named to the All-Academic First Team. This is Kluh’s second consecutive year making First Team and Walker’s first after making the Third Team last year. Student-athletes must achieve a 4.00 GPA for the academic year in order to be named to the First Team.
Freshman Kelsey Kluh, Katelyn’s younger sister and member of the volleyball and softball teams, was named to the All-Academic Second Team after earning a 3.88 GPA. Student-athletes must achieve between a 3.80-3.99 GPA for the academic year in order to be named to the Second Team.
Sophomores Skylar Clark and Maui Gianan and freshmen Kelsey Hanks and Joseph Walsh were named to the All-Academic Third Team. Clark, a member of the softball team, finished the year with a 3.63 GPA while Gianan, a member of the women’s soccer team, earned a 3.61 GPA. Hanks, from the volleyball team, ended the year with a 3.68 GPA, and Walsh, a member of the men’s soccer team, accumulated a 3.64 GPA. Student-athletes must achieve between a 3.60-3.79 GPA for the academic year in order to be named to the Third Team.
“We are proud because those seven students epitomized what we believe it means to be a CSM student-athlete, especially given the circumstances of our spring semester,” CSM Executive Director of Student Life and Athletics Michelle Ruble said of this year’s honorees
This is the second consecutive year CSM had seven student-athletes named to NJCAA All-Academic Teams.
“NJCAA student-athletes proved that no obstacle is too difficult to overcome,” shared NJCAA President & CEO Dr. Chirstopher Parker, in a Friday webpage post. “These difficulties pushed our student-athletes to the limit this year, but the opportunity to overcome these challenges presented itself and our student-athletes flourished academically. The association commends all individuals for their continued success on the playing surfaces and in the classrooms.”
