The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Public Safety and Preparedness Department encourages CSM students, their families, faculty, staff and any interested members of the community to download the CSM Safe App to ensure that timely information is at users’ fingertips during both emergency and routine security/safety situations. Launched in 2019, the CSM Safe App is free and allows users to access everything from campus maps, to the CSM Headlines newsfeed and receive immediate notifications concerning delayed openings, traffic congestion, safety threats, or medical emergencies at the college.

"Ensuring campus safety is everyone’s duty,” said Interim Executive Director of Public Safety Denise Mohun-Hintze. “It’s important to understand that campus safety is a shared responsibility of everyone who comes to CSM to learn, work, and attend events. When on campus we all must be aware of our surroundings and know how to report any unusual events. We encourage students, staff, faculty and their families to download the CSM Safe App to better prepare themselves in the event of an emergency, share information, and to stay informed."

CSM community members can download the free and interactive “CSM Safe App” for iOS (Apple) and Android devices. Once the CSM Safe App is downloaded, users can customize the app to share information pertinent to individual location and needs. On the app, users can view alerts for individual campuses, report a tip, review emergency procedures for a variety of situations, request emergency assistance via public safety or one click to 911, and explore support resources available to students.

Other CSM Safe App features include:

  • Campus alerts provide persistent in-app notifications and push notifications for location-specific emergencies to keep students and parents informed. An additional bulletin board feature is available in the event of an ongoing crises.
  • Offline emergency plans are one click away delivering action plans for weather emergencies and evacuations.
  • Emergency contact phone numbers contain all pertinent phone numbers for on- and off-campus assistance with emergencies.
  • ‘Support resources’ provides quick reference guides offering students everything from academic advising and mental health assistance, to sexual assault counseling and veteran and military support services.
  • An “I’m OK!” button allows users to share their exact location with campus security and other CSM Safe App users.
