Visiting Speakers, a Creepy and Kooky Musical, and Events for Veterans Make for a Lively November at CSM

Business Speaker Series: The Future of Service. Nov. 2, 7 - 8 p.m. La Plata Campus, Center for Business and Industry (BI Building), Room 113. The Kappa Beta Delta Business Honor Society Business Speakers Series presents “The Future of Service” with Dr. Roland Rust. Rust is the Distinguished University Professor and David Bruce Smith Chair in Marketing at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, where he is also the founder and executive director of the Center for Excellence in Service. A question-and-answer session will follow his talk. This event is open to all and is especially relevant for people interested in entrepreneurship, management, customer service, and marketing. Free. brittany-hailer.jpgConnections Literary Series: Poet and Author Brittany Hailer. Nov. 3, 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. La Plata Campus, Learning Resource Center (LR Building), Room 102. Brittany Hailer is an investigative journalist and writer and a teaching assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh. Her memoir, "Animal You'll Surely Become," was published by Tolsun Books in 2018, and her work has appeared in a variety of publications. Hailer is originally from Southern Maryland and her lyric essays explore place and family history. She will discuss how to interrogate a family system and reinvent scene and story from family interviews and memory. The Connections Literary Series is presented by CSM's English, Communication, and Languages Department in the School of Liberal Arts, and is sponsored in part by the CSM Foundation and supported by Galazio Restaurant. Military and Veterans Registration Sessions. Nov. 6 - 10, various times and locations. CSM’s Veterans Affairs team is hosting Registration Assistance Sessions from Nov. 6-10. Attend a session at your preferred CSM campus and get one-on-one assistance signing up for your spring classes. No appointment needed! Dates and times are: Nov. 6, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.: La Plata and Prince Frederick; Nov. 7, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.: La Plata and Leonardtown; Nov. 8, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.: La Plata and Leonardtown; Nov. 9, 12 – 3 p.m.: La Plata and Leonardtown; Nov. 10, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.: Leonardtown. Veteran’s Breakfast. Nov. 6, 9 - 10:30 a.m. Light breakfast at the La Plata and Prince Frederick Campuses. Grab donuts, coffee, and orange juice at the Veterans Lounge in the LR Building, Room 103 at La Plata or Building A, Room 101 at Prince Frederick.

Tell Your Military Story. Nov. 6, 12 p.m. Special guest Dario DiBattista, director of Towson University’s Military & Veterans Center, will join attendees to share his military journey to motivate veterans to persevere though all obstacles. Lunch and Learn. Nov. 7, 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Guest speakers from the Student Veterans of America (SVA) and the Maryland Department of Labor will discuss the many benefits that the veteran-centered nonprofit provides to military-connected students at CSM and share the opportunities and resources available to Marylanders who serve in uniform. Attend via Zoom or in person at the Veterans Lounge on the La Plata Campus, LR Building, Room 103.

Veterans Affairs Conversation. Nov. 8, 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. Maryland Secretary for Veterans Affairs Anthony Woods joins us to discuss assisting current and past service members and their families. Attend via Zoom or in person at the Veterans Lounge on the La Plata Campus, LR Building, Room 103.

Movie Night. Nov. 8, 6 - 8 p.m. Join us for movie night at the La Plata Campus Veterans Lounge (LR Building, Room 103). Enjoy movie theater-style popcorn on us and choose from a selection of films including "American Sniper," "Black Hawk Down," "Saving Private Ryan," and "12 Strong."

Meet the President Breakfast. Nov. 9, 9 - 11 a.m. Join CSM President Dr. Yolanda Wilson and Toni Kruszka of the CSM Foundation as they share information on foundation scholarships and other scholarship opportunities for veteran and military-connected students. Larry Abell will also join us to discuss the Maryland Veterans Museum at Patriot Park. La Plata Campus, BI Building, Room 113.

Veterans Cookout. Nov. 10, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Veterans cookout celebrating the birthday of the Marine Corps. CSM veteran and military-connected students and their families are invited to join us on the Great Lawn at the Leonardtown Campus for a day of fun, games, and free barbecue, courtesy of Mission BBQ and CSM Student Life!

Women Veterans Meet and Greet. Nov. 10, 2 - 4 p.m. Attend a meet and greet for female veterans led by Dr. Tiffany Daniel, chaplain for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Department of Maryland. Daniel will lead a discussion of topics including VA benefits, childbirth, homelessness, medical care, and mental health. Leonardtown Campus, Building C, Room 113.

Veterans Day Parade. Nov. 11, 10 a.m. Leonardtown, St. Mary’s County, and the Southern Maryland region salute America’s veterans at Leonardtown’s Annual Veterans Day Parade, beginning at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Ryken High School and proceeding through the town. The parade is followed by a memorial ceremony in Leonardtown Square. Parade begins at St. Mary’s Ryken High School and proceeds through Leonardtown.

In this musical dark comedy directed by AnnMarie Saunders, the titular family is struggling as their now grown-up daughter, Wednesday, brings home a love interest who dares to be... normal. Hungerford Gallery Talk: 'Moonshot' By Heather Monaghan. Nov. 14, 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. La Plata Campus, Hank Willoughby Foundation Center for the Arts (FA Building), Tony Hungerford Memorial Art Gallery. Heather Monaghan is a senior graphic designer and illustrator at NASA creating artwork for some of humanity's most ambitious scientific endeavors including the International Space Station, the Artemis missions, and the James Webb Space Telescope. "MOONSHOT" is an exploration of Monaghan's artistic journey from her early student work to some of the professional work she produces today. The exhibition runs through Dec. 15. A Nation at Thought: Restoring Wisdom in America’s Schools. Nov. 16, 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. 6105 Foster Place in Hughesville, Md. Leadership Southern Maryland (LSM) invites the public to join them for breakfast and engage in a provocative conversation with celebrated scholar, author and executive director of the Johns Hopkins Institute for Education Policy Dr. David Steiner as he discusses his new book, “A Nation at Thought: Restoring Wisdom in America’s Schools.” LSM presents this event in partnership with the CSM Thomas V. “Mike” Miller, Jr. Center for Leadership, The Patuxent Partnership, the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Department of Educational Studies, and KBR. Bring plenty of resumes, because the Tri-County Job and Career Fair is where qualified and eager job seekers meet with employers from throughout the region.
