Virginia Commonwealth University On-Campus Admission Representative Visits. An admissions representative from Virginia Commonwealth University will be on the La Plata Campus for students who are interested in transferring to their institution. Connections Literary Series: Poet Sean Thomas Dougherty. April 1. 7:30 p.m. Prince Frederick Campus (Building B), Room 103/104/105. Sean Thomas Dougherty is the author or editor of 20 books including the Publishers Weekly Top 10 New Releases in Poetry, “Death Prefers the Minor Keys.” His books have received the 2021 Jacar Press Full Length Poetry Prize, the 2020 Bitter Oleander Library of Poetry Prize the Paterson Poetry Prize and the Housatonic Book Award from Western Connecticut State University. Dougherty’s numerous awards also include The James Hearst Poetry Prize from North American Review, an Established Artist Fellowship for Northwest Pennsylvania, two Pennsylvania Council for the Arts Fellowships in Poetry, and a United States Fulbright Lectureship to the Balkans. Dougherty currently works as a writing mentor with the MFA program in creative writing at Western Connecticut State University and as a medical technician and long-term caregiver. Holocaust Survivor Talk. April 3. 1 p.m. La Plata Campus, Center for Business and Industry (BI Building), Room 113. Esther Rosenfeld Starobin was born in Adelsheim, Germany on April 3, 1937. A Holocaust Survivor, Esther will share her family’s experiences, her rescue from Germany as a small child, and leaving behind her parents and brother to an uncertain future. Transfer Thursdays. April 4. 11, 18, and 25. 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Transfer institutions are now coming to students virtually. Each Thursday, representatives from three institutions will be available to chat with students virtually and help navigate the transfer experience. Provocations Faculty Excellence Speaker Series Presents Richard Bilsker “In a Human Voice: Revisiting Carol Gilligan’s “In a Different Voice” 40 Years On.” April 4. 7 p.m. Leonardtown Campus, Building A, Auditorium (Room 206). In 1982, Carol Gilligan published “In a Different Voice,” a work whose influence reverberated throughout psychology, the social sciences, and philosophy.  Out of her research, Gilligan noted that girls and young women would often approach the thought experiment (the Heinz dilemma) differently than their male counterparts.  Forty years later, Gilligan has revisited the topic.  The result, “In a Human Voice,” was published in October 2023. 19th Annual CSM Jazzfest. April 5 – 6. 7:30 p.m. La Plata Campus, Hank Willoughby Foundation Center for the Arts (FA Building), Brad and Linda Gottfried Theater. The Randy Runyon project will perform on Friday, April 5. The group, comprised of member of CSM’s Solid Brass Big Band, will perform a variety of funk, fusion, and jazz classics led by CSM’s Solid Brass Jazz Ensemble director, Randy Runyon. The Glass Menagerie. April 19 – 28. Fridays and Saturdays, 7:30 p.m. Sundays, 3 p.m. La Plata Campus, Hank Willoughby Foundation Center for the Arts (FA Building), Brad and Linda Gottfried Theater. Amanda Wingfield is a faded remnant of Southern gentility who now lives in a dingy St. Louis apartment with her son, Tom, and her daughter, Laura, who has a physical handicap and debilitating shyness. The father has left home; Tom supports his mother and sister with a shoe-factory job he finds unbearable. Night Of Engineering. April 25. 6 p.m. La Plata Campus, Community Education (CE) Building, Room 101 and Zoom. CSM is proud to offer, in partnership with the University of Maryland (UMD), a seamless pathway to a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering. CSM offers the Associate of Science Engineering Degree to its students. Upon completing the engineering curriculum at CSM, students may then transfer with junior status to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering at UMD. Students also have the opportunity to do an internship with the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD), a division of NAVAIR, with a possible employment opportunity upon successful graduation and completion of all Pathway Program requirements.
