The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Foundation is partnering with the Maryland Academy of Advanced Practice Clinicians (MAAPC) to create a new scholarship for nursing students.

On October 1, 2025, MAAPC presented the CSM Foundation with $57,5000 to establish the Future Nightingales Endowed Scholarship to support CSM nursing students.

CSM President Dr. Yolanda Wilson said this scholarship demonstrates the community-wide support in Southern Maryland for the next generation of health care workers.

“CSM is preparing future nurses to fill a critical need in our region’s skilled health care workforce,” said Dr. Wilson. “We’re proud to partner with MAACP to equip students with the support they need to succeed, so they can continue improving the health and wellness of the communities they serve.”

CSM nursing students who have earned their high school diploma, are a Maryland resident, and enrolled in at least seven nursing credit hours will be eligible. Students who have demonstrated a financial need will be prioritized for the scholarship.

MAAPC President Marie Tarleton said the scholarship will provide a pathway to success for nursing students in Southern Maryland and create new opportunities for their financial and educational mobility.

“MAAPC recognizes that investing in nursing education through scholarships creates cascading benefits that extend far beyond individual recipients, generating substantial returns for improved patient outcomes, workforce sustainability, and healthier communities,” Tarleton said. “It is MAAPC’s great honor to establish the Future Nightingales Endowed Scholarship at CSM.”

The Future Nightingales Endowed Scholarship, which is administered by the CSM Foundation, will provide two annual scholarships of $1,250. These awards may be renewed for a second year under the condition the students retain a grade of B or higher in all nursing courses.

Established in 2005 by nurse practitioners in Southern Maryland, MAAPC works to address healthcare access challenges, particularly in rural or underserved communities in Maryland. The nonprofit aims to prepare healthcare professionals to practice at their highest level of training and develop innovative educational programs.

Over the past five years, the Foundation has awarded more than $5 million in scholarships, averaging 800 awards annually to support student success.
