The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) celebrated a new class of healthcare professionals during the Health Career Readiness Recognition Ceremony on January 15, honoring graduates prepared to enter this in-demand field.

The ceremony recognized 89 graduates across seven healthcare fields, including Dental Assistant, Certified Administrative Assistant, Phlebotomy Technician, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, Community Health Worker, Certified Personal Trainer, and Certified Nutrition Coach.

Each graduate received a certificate to commemorate this accomplishment, and a pin symbolizing their entry and acceptance into their chosen field.

CSM President Dr. Yolanda Wilson congratulated the class for their hard work and determination, emphasizing the powerful impact they will have as they step into their careers.

“You are entering professions that strengthen communities in real and lasting ways,” Dr. Wilson said. “Candidates, you are ready for this moment. You are prepared for the responsibility that lies ahead, and you are needed now more than ever.”

Healthcare remains one of the nation’s fastest-growing and in-demand fields. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the industry employed more than 22.5 million workers in the U.S. in 2024, an increase of about 4.5 million jobs since 2014. This makes it the largest, and fastest growing employer, of any industry sector.

Kelly Winters, Executive Director of Workforce Development, said this growth makes now an ideal time to enter the field, and assured the graduates this opportunity will also make a difference by helping others.

“Your work will help keep health systems running, improve access to care, and strengthen the well-being of our communities,” Winters said. “That is meaningful work, and it is work that matters.”

The Workforce Development Healthcare programs combine career-focused training and hands-on, clinical experience to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and industry-recognized credentials necessary for a successful career. The programs open pathways for students to enter the healthcare workforce or continue into higher learning.

Health Programs Chair Candi Hume congratulated the graduates on their achievements and highlighted the vital role they will play as they address critical healthcare needs in the region.

“Our graduates are not only equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel but also embody the compassion and integrity that are the hallmarks of this noble profession,” Hume said.

In closing, Winters offered two pieces of advice as they step into their careers:

“First: Own the profession you’re entering. Healthcare depends on individuals who show up prepared, reliable, and patient-centered,” Winters said. “Second: Stay curious. Healthcare evolves quickly, and continued learning is how careers advance. CSM is always here for your next credential.”
